Ahead of the release of Final Fantasy XV, a full length, animated movie Kingsglaive will hit theaters this weekend in select cities.  Now you can watch the first 12 minutes of the movie below.

Final Fantasy XV, as with all main Final Fantasy installments before it, is a stand alone story in a unique world.  However, this time the game is releasing with an anime, Brotherhood, and a movie, Kingsglaive, to fill in the gaps of the game the creators didn’t have time to tell.

“What couldn’t fit into the game, we then put in Kingsglaive and Brotherhood,” says Saori Itamuro. Where Kingsglaive tells the story of the battle with Niflheim from the perspective of events that occur somewhat parallel to the timeline of the video game, the five-part anime series, Brotherhood, serves as backstory and prequel showing the life of Prince Noctis before the video game begins. “These are separate stories in a single whole,” Itamuro continues, “with each story presented in the most appropriate format.”

The movie starts out with a voiceover, explaining the events that lead up to the Final Fantasy XV story.  From there we are quickly dropped into the middle of a battle between the Kingsglaive of Lucis and the technologically superior Niflheim.  The battle is intense, there is magic, guns, missiles, mechs, and even demons.  Yes, demons.  Of course it’s all beautifully designed and detailed as is the trademark of the Final Fantasy series in general.  Through all of that we are introduced, very briefly, to all major players in the film, King Regis, Lunafreya, Nyx, Titus, Libertus, and Crowe.

Just when you get hooked, the preview ends and we are forced to wait once more.

Will the end of war bring the promise of peace? As a weary king guards his sacred stone against imperial usurpers and the rising tide of rebellion, a hero must prove himself worthy.

For generations, war has raged between Niflheim, a militaristic empire expanding its territory by force, and Lucis, a kingdom holding fast to its lands. The Lucian crown city of Insomnia stands under the protection of the Wall, a massive force field maintained by the power of the Crystal, channeled through the bearer of the royal ring, the noble King Regis (Sean Bean). The king also empowers an elite troop of soldiers known as the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king’s magic, Nyx Ulric (Aaron Paul) and his fellow soldiers fight to protect Lucis.

As the overwhelming might of the empire bears down, King Regis is presented with an ultimatum– to marry his son, Prince Noctis, to imperial captive Princess Lunafreya of Tenebrae (Lena Headey), and surrender all lands outside the crown city to the empire’s rule. The king capitulates, drawing the ire of his forsaken subjects, and it soon becomes clear the empire will
stop at nothing to achieve their nefarious goals. Only the Kingsglaive and royal ring stand between the empire and world domination.

As the various factions of Niflheim, the rebellion, and the King’s inner circle hatch deadly plots against one another, Nyx finds himself at the center of the action, guarding Lunafreya, whose commitment to securing peace reassures Nyx of the rightness of his path. As unexpected loyalties emerge and secret powers are revealed, Nyx must summon his own inner hero to action, with the fate of his people and the world hanging in the balance.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV hits theaters on August 19 in select cities, and comes home digitally on August 30.  Blu-ray & DVD on October 4.
