Still of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The world of magic is getting a delayed release date. Warner Bros. is pushing back the debut of Fantastic Beasts 3 from its previous fall 2021 slot, Deadline reports. The news comes hot on the heels of actor Johnny Depp‘s departure from the Fantastic Beasts franchise last week. Presumably, Depp’s exit is the cause for the threequel’s delay.

Now, Fantastic Beasts 3 is slated for a summer 2022 release. This isn’t the first time a flick in the Hogwarts universe has saw a summer blockbuster premiere. Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 all had July releases. Perhaps Fantastic Beasts 3, the third installment of the Newt Scamander saga, will fare better with a summer debut.

Depp was asked to resign from portraying villain Gellert Grindelwald following a lost libel case against tabloid The Sun. The actor took the tabloid to court after the latter alleged Depp was a “wife beater” in a 2018 article. Depp’s casting was a tumultuous affair from the start, especially given ex-wife Amber Heard‘s domestic violence allegations against him.

Warner Bros. plans to recast Grindelwald for Fantastic Beasts 3. According to DeadlineColin Farrell will not reprise the role that he previously held as the antagonist in 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Farrell is currently shooting for The Batman, wherein he’s playing The Penguin.

Fantastic Beasts 3 stars Eddie RedmayneJude LawKatherine WaterstonEzra MillerAlison SudolDan Fogler and Jessica Williams. The film is now scheduled to premiere July 15, 2022.
