Dune: Part Two

Warner Brothers released a new trailer for Dune: Part Two on Thursday, focusing on the rise of fury from the film’s protagonist. We also get the first glimpse of the Emperor Shaddam IV, played by Christopher Walken

If you recall, Dune: Part One ended with Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) stumbling upon the Freman. Paul literally fought his way into the Fremen sietch, in an effort to save himself and his mother. This was also the moment he met the girl of his dreams, Chani (Zendaya) and Paul realized his visions were coming true.

Paul’s visions play a big part in his story, as they give him a glimpse into his future. In the trailer for Dune: Part Two, Paul is afraid of those visions. Not because he can’t control himself, but because he gains power he’s not sure he wants. Throughout the trailer, we see Paul come to terms with his destiny and embrace his new role as a leader, but at what cost? Others see signs of Paul’s destiny as a prophecy begins to unfold.  At the end of the trailer, it’s clear that Paul knows the only way to beat the Emperor and Harkonnens is to control the one thing they want the most … the spice. If he can control that, he can also destroy it.

What’s interesting to me is how focused the trailer is on Paul and Chani, as they are both fighting for different reasons. Chani fights for the Fremen and to take back their home world. Paul fights to avenge his father. There are some great fights in Dune: Part Two. We get to see Chani on the battlefield and she appears to need no help holding her own against the Emperor’s Sardaukar. And Paul faces off with the younger and stronger Harkonnen, Feyd-Rautha, (Austin Butler), Rabban’s younger brother. Villeneuve’s version of Feyd, is much different that what I expected, but still just as dangerous.

Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling and Stephen McKinley Henderson all return in Dune: Part Two. Joining the cast with Walken are Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot. The film is written by Jon Spaihts and Villeneuve, who also directs. Watch the trailer below.

Dune: Part Two premieres on November 3, 2023.
