goggins

Announced first through Instagram, then later through the official Tomb Raider Twitter account, Walton Goggins is joining the cast of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot as the antagonist.

Goggins is probably best known for his work in The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained.  Currently appearing in Six, a limited series airing on History Channel.  Goggins will star opposite Alicia Vikander who is playing the title role of Lara Croft.  No other cast details have been announced.

The reboot is slated to follow the style of the new games vs the original ones.  That means we will see a much younger, untested Croft making this movie more of an origin story.  While it remains to be seen if the film will take place within the game universe’s timeline, the story is set to revolve around a young Lara as she sets out on one of her first archeological adventure.  The impetus being her missing father and the search for him to discover if he is alive or dead.

Angelina Jolie played the first screen adaptation of the gun wielding archeologist in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, with a sequel, The Cradle of Life, following in 2003.  The original movies followed the game design closely, complete with short shorts, boots, and a tank top.  While 2016’s Warcraft is the highest grossing movie based on a video game globally, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is still the highest grossing movie based on a video game domestically.  It still remains one of the bestselling and beloved video game franchises of all time.

Tomb Raider is scheduled to hit theaters March 16, 2018.
