Vikings season 5 premiered with a two hour episode Wednesday night. And, after the inevitable loss of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and the avenging of his death…the series is starting a new saga of sorts. The focus is now on who will rule Kattegat, Norway and the Lothbrok clan. I’ve got some thoughts on what might become of Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick). Join me in Kattegat, won’t you?
Let’s talk Lagertha. She’s amazing and powerful and, let’s face it… she’s on borrowed time. I don’t think anyone wants to see her fall, and the threats she’s under now are no more or less menacing than those she’s faced before. But, her family is gone. Ragnar is dead, Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) is galavanting in the Mediterranean, and her own warriors are starting to question her grip on power. I predict she won’t make it through season 5. I mean, she literally says “Now I can die” in the teaser for this season. The question is, who will do it?

The seer told her she would be killed by one of Ragnar’s sons. So, we can expect that to be true…. and we’d assume that Ivar (Alex Hogh) would be the most likely suspect, as he promised to kill her. If Ivar killed her, you’d get flat out war between Ivar and Bjorn, the youngest and oldest of Ragnar’s sons. They represent two generations and two very distinct sides of their father’s values. Bjorn is protection. Ivar is blood lust. We all want them to fight, right? I do.
If you’re looking for a twist, my money is on Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith). In the sneak peek for season 5 that ran after the season premiere, there’s a scene where Ubbe and Lagertha make an alliance. He’ll help her against King Harald, and she’ll help him against Ivar. Ubbe has proven to have a heart and principles. But, Lagertha did kill his mother, and it’s possible that he as his own agenda for vengeance.

In the meantime, Lagertha has Harald (Peter Franzen) to contend with. And, in the actual sagas, King Harald did, in fact, become king of all of Norway. So, I’m thinking Harald will win Kattegat, Lagertha will live to fight another day and perhaps fall during that fight.
We shall see. One thing is certain. Lagertha has proven very hard to kill. Vikings season 5 is currently running Wednesday nights on the History Channel.
