Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following article contains spoilers for Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel Season 1.
Hazbin Hotel’s Vaggie
Vaggie Fast Facts:
Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz) is an angel who previously worked for Heaven as an Exorcist. The Exorcists are the private military battalion who personally serve Adam (Alex Brightman).
As an Exorcist, Vaggie participated in the annual tradition of traveling to Hell from Heaven and participating in a violent raid against the citizens of Hell. This regular extermination served to curb overpopulation in Hell, prevent a potential uprising and provide entertainment to the depraved angels.

However, during one fateful Extermination, Vaggie encountered a young Sinner in Hell. While she had previously murdered many Sinners, Vaggie found herself unable to follow through with harming the child and instead released them. Witnessing this, fellow Exorcist Lute (Jessica Vosk) turned on Vaggie and attacked her.
In the resulting violence, Vaggie lost her left eye and wings, and was abandoned and left behind in Hell. Fortunately, Vaggie was subsequently found by Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), the Princess of Hell.
A Happy Day in Hell
After meeting when Charlie rescued Vaggie in the wake of her assault by Lute, Vaggie and Charlie eventually became lovers. Vaggie developed a deep loyalty to Charlie, and vowed to protect her no matter what the cost. Furthermore, Charlie’s moral compass strongly influenced Vaggie, allowing her to grow into a new person. However, for many years, Vaggie concealed the nature of her origin as an angel from Charlie.
When Charlie began her Hazbin Hotel project, which was designed to rehabilitate Sinners so they could immigrate to Heaven, Vaggie fully supported her partner’s project. This included assisting in the Hazbin’s rehabilitative programs and spearheading an effort to make a commercial advertising their services. But, thanks to her perspective as a former Exorcist, she did maintain some reservations regarding the way the angels would react to the Hotel.

In the episode “Welcome to Heaven,” Vaggie joined Charlie on a visit to Heaven. This was in spite of Vaggie’s reservations regarding be recognized by the angels there. Ultimately, her origins are announced by Adam, who relishes the opportunity to reveal to Charlie that her lover has been lying to her.
Initially, Charlie feels betrayed by Vaggie’s deception. During the episode “Hello Rosie!,” Charlie continues her work without Vaggie while Vaggie trains with Carmilla Carmine (Daphne Rubin-Vega). But by the end of the episode, Charlie has forgiven Vaggie for lying, and the couple stand together against the next Extermination.
The Real Deal
Vaggie is the real deal. While she may have originally been a murderous Exorcist, she is able to grow beyond this and start a new life. And while she may still utilize her well-honed combat skills, she learns that she must be motivated by love in order to be successful.
Because of her history as an Exorcist, she recognizes the threat posed by the angels better than anyone. However, this does not prevent her from standing up for Hell when the season’s climactic Extermination begins.
Why She Matters
Why does Vaggie matter? She shows us that change is possible, no matter how far we have strayed from the righteous path. By renouncing her service to Heaven and joining the side of Hell, she demonstrates that it is always possible to turn over a new leaf and begin working towards redemption. And she demonstrates how surrounding ourselves with individuals who model moral behavior can help us achieve new personal heights.

Understand that fighting for love is the only way to prevail, even if the world seems stacked against you. And recognize that when women stand together, even the oppressive forces of Heaven itself won’t be enough to conquer us.
