Well, well, well…The reign of terror has truly begun in Storybrooke this week. Now that the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) and Mr. Hyde (Sam Witwer) have joined forces, it’s going to take more than magic to stop them. Because apparently, even Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) can’t kill Mr. Hyde…hmmmmm….I have a theory about that.
Mr. Hyde threatens the life of Belle (Emilie De Ravin) and their unborn baby. So what does Mr. Gold do? Traps Belle…of course to protect her. He puts a protection spell on the Jolly Roger and Belle can’t leave the ship. Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) gives her a magic conch shell to call him if she needs anything or if there is trouble.
Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and the team are working with Dr. Jekyll (Hank Harris) to stop Hyde and the Evil Queen, but they need help with potion. Regina (Parrilla) enlists the help of Mr. Gold, but when they arrive at Frankenstein’s lab, Hyde has destroyed it. AND! Gold double crosses Regina because he made a deal with the Evil Queen for Belle’s life. Again, the Evil Queen is one step ahead of Regina… After the betrayal, Dr. Jekyll retreats to Hook’s ship and tells Belle his story.
In flashbacks, we get to see how Jekyll and Hyde came to be. Surprise!! Rumpelstiltskin gave Dr. Jekyll the magic he needed to perfect his potion. And of course, there is a girl involved…Mary (Elizabeth Blackmore). Mary is fond of Dr. Jekyll, but she is obviously attracted to Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde is everything that Jekyll is not, charismatic, handsome, passionate, exciting…
Mary and Hyde spend the night together and the next morning, to her surprise, she wakes up with Jekyll. Jekyll doesn’t ever remember when he’s Mr. Hyde, so he’s just as confused until he realizes that Mary wants to be with Hyde. In Jekyll’s jealous rage, he kills Mary! To cover his tracks, he drinks the potion and blames Hyde. Is this why Hyde turns evil? Is Jekyll the real evil one of the two?
Later Rumplestiltskin confronts Hyde after Mary’s death. Rumple is angry that Hyde is so weak because he loved Mary. He curses Jekyll/Hyde to live in the same body and that’s how they came to be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And Hyde hates Jekyll for killing Mary and Jekyll hates Hyde for stealing Mary.
Turns out that Gold double-crossed Regina so he could kill Hyde himself… but he can’t kill him. Do you think it’s because the only way to kill Hyde, is to also kill Jekyll???? In his attempt, Hyde acquires the Dark One’s blade and now controls Gold. They leave to visit Belle on the ship.
Jekyll gets a little weird with Belle after telling her the story of Mary. He attacks Belle!! She tries to call to Hook using the conch, but Jekyll destroys it. He tells her that he planned to kill Belle to make the Dark One pay. Hyde and Gold are standing on the docks watching…Hyde won’t let Gold go to help Belle. Luckily, Hook shows up just in time…he heard her call. He pushes Jekyll into a spear and that kills both Jekyll and Hyde! (I WAS RIGHT!!) Regina shows up and Gold tells her that the only way to kill the Evil Queen is to kill Regina!!!!
Regina tells Emma that she has to die to defeat the Evil Queen. And her darkness can return…the same way it did in Jekyll. She makes Emma promise to take care of her if the situation calls for it.
Belle yells at Gold for destroying Jekyll and Hyde. She asks why he went to Jekyll in the first place…why did he need that potion? Rumple says h e wanted to separate himself, Gold, from Rumplestiltskin, the Dark One for Belle. Belle doesn’t buy it. She tells him she doesn’t need his protection and that she sees him for who he truly is. Gold tells her that their child will be the reason that Belle needs him. She will need Gold more than ever, because that is HIS child.
In other parts of Storybrooke, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) goes back to school and bumps into Shireen, from the Land of Untold Stories…*cough* Jasmine *cough*. Snow’s students aren’t learning like she wants them to…as a matter of fact, they don’t quite remember anything she taught them. Shireen tells her to change her teaching approach. Snow uses her “princess” skills to teach the students about Newton’s 3rd Law. Later after school, Snow White thanks Shireen for her suggestions.
Shireen had told Snow a story of a princess who lost her kingdom because she didn’t lead by example…but she left before finding out if the princess ever found her way. Later Shireen goes to The Oracle (Jordyn Ashley Olson), saying that no one knows who she really is. They are looking for someone…ALADDIN!!!!
Ok, I liked that they finally gave Gold and Belle more purpose in this episode. They’ve been kind of lingering since the season began. I really think they need to settle on Gold being either all good, or all bad. This back and forth is giving me whiplash.
But…predictable again. Of course, you have to kill both Regina and the Evil Queen to resolve the dilemma. I was wondering how far in the season we would have to go before they figured that out. The longer they can keep the Evil Queen, the more entertaining this will be. Or maybe Regina can re-merge the two and be both again.
This episode wasn’t so Emma centered since she is still dealing with the visions of her death, HOWEVER! Aladdin, another savior is supposedly in Storybrooke. Or does the spirit of the savior pass on from person to person? The Oracle feels his presence, but is it Emma she is detecting instead?
The foreshadowing of Emma’s promise to do whatever it takes to stop the Evil Queen by killing Regina if she has too…I guess that’s why Regina isn’t with the family in Emma’s vision. But Regina can’t truly…right???
How cute were Henry (Jared Gilmore) and his girlfriend, Violet (Olivia Steele Falconer)!! Henry does have a life outside of his moms’s problems.
David (Josh Dallas) is kind of freaking out that Emma and Hook are moving in together. It’s kind of cute…but Emma is as old as David, so it’s also pretty weird. The implication that David is hiding something though…I wish they had touched on that a little. The writers always do this. They give us a tiny tidbit of a bigger story, leave it out for an episode or two or until we forget about it, then bring it back. Whatever David’s secret is, maybe it will be big enough to really shake things up.
I love this show, but it’s becoming easy to figure out the plot. I need a huge twist in the story to get excited about. I am excited about Aladdin and Jasmine’s story…that’s my favorite Disney story!
