Spring is in full swing and, if you are like me, that means spring cleaning. The season change is a great excuse to refresh and reorganize. However, if you aren’t quite as motivated as I am, you can play Unpacking and do some digital tidying instead. Spring also represents new beginnings much like moving into a new home. In Unpacking, experience a lifetime by simply unpacking moving boxes.

Unpacking
Unpacking (2021) is a puzzle game developed by Witch Beam and published by Humble Bunble. Live through the life of a young woman by unpacking her belongings in her various homes throughout her life. Every room has a designated number of boxes filled with items you must place around the room.
Drag and drop various items like clothes, dishes, or toiletries into their proper places. Tapping the item will rotate it for the perfect fit. Zoom in and out to grab and move smaller items more easily. If you have ever moved, you know that sometimes items get placed in the wrong boxes. If you find a frying pan in your bathroom box, just put it off to the side and take it to the kitchen.
Once you have unpacked all of the boxes, misplaced items will be highlighted in red until you find the right spot. Although some items do have a designated place, you can get a little creative with the placement of most things. When you get every item into its rightful home, you will get a shiny gold star, add a memory to your scrapbook and move into your next place.

Each new living space offers different rooms, a unique vibe and new items to unpack. If you get a room picture perfect, capture it in photo mode which includes border, filters, and stickers. While this game is short and simple, this is one of those occasions where less is more.

Unpacking is a simple yet charming game with a lot of nostalgic value. The cute and colorful pixel aesthetic, super chill soundtrack, and Zen style gameplay makes this a great choice for cozy gamers. Bonus points if organizing these pixelated possessions motivates you to do a little real life spring cleaning. The satisfaction of finishing rooms in the game definitely inspired me because nothing beats that clean room feeling. Although I felt the price tag was a little high on this one, I enjoyed the experience so it was ultimately worth the money.

While I played, I couldn’t help but think about unpacking at all of the various places I have lived throughout my life. My husband and I often talk about the day that we moved into our first home because it means so much us. Unpacking captures that nostalgic feeling without any of the stress of actually moving. With a simple drag and drop, you can easily place all of your items right where they belong. If only it were that easy in real life.
