DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Undone episode “Mexico” has spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

Welcome back, time travelers! Undone‘s third outing dives headfirst into intergenerational trauma as Alma and Becca discover their grandmother verbally abused Camila. It explains Camila’s often cross behavior toward her daughters. “Like breeds like” and all that.

“Mexico” is a step up from the previous episode, catapulting the seasonal narrative forward with more of the time-traveling sci-fi magic we love, complemented by stunning rotoscope animation. It explores poignant themes like the nature of trauma and whether younger generations can heal from it.

Ready to dig deep into “Mexico”? Let’s get to it.

We open right where we left off in episode two, with Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), Alma (Rosa Salazar) and Becca (Angelique Cabral) watching while Camila drives away. Suddenly, everything shifts, and we see time bend as our trio travels to the night Jacob drove himself and Farnaz (Sheila Vand) off a cliff. Of course, this occurred in Jacob and Alma’s original timeline, so Becca’s bewilderment is understandable.

They stand in the middle of the road while a younger Jacob hurtles toward them in his car. Becca starts sobbing, revealing she can feel her father’s pain. Becca whisks her sister and dad back to the present.

Alma and Jacob try to explain what Becca saw. Alma asserts Becca merely transported herself into Jacob’s nightmare. Jacob reminds Becca that with great power comes great responsibility. It’s best to stop time-hopping altogether.

After some digging, Jacob informs his daughters that Camila purchased a plane ticket to Mexico.

Becca arrives home to find a note from Reed, claiming he gathered his belongings to stay elsewhere that night. He’s not sure he can trust her anymore. Unable to sleep, Becca leaves a voicemail for her mother. Meanwhile, Alma returns to the hospital in a nightmare, reliving a moment we saw in Season 1. Alma stands behind herself and orders herself to press an elevator button.

Later, Becca wakes Alma the following morning. They video call their grandma (Renée Victor) and their aunt, Monse (Ana Ortiz), who reside in Mexico. Alma and Becca speak Spanish, asking their grandmother if she’s seen Camila. While she hasn’t, she encourages Becca and Alma to travel to Mexico for a much-needed family visit.

Then, our dynamic time-traveling duo arrives in Mexico. Alma and Becca sit with their grandmother and Monse. Alma procures the painting of Camila from her bag and asks her grandma about it. Did she know Alejandro? Grandma evades Alma’s questions.

Suddenly, Becca and Alma wind up in their grandmother’s memory, watching a younger version of her while she observes Camila (Constance Marie). Something’s amiss.

Next, Alma and Becca go out for drinks with Monse, who spills the beans regarding Camila and Alejandro. Yes, he was her ex-boyfriend. While Monse delves into the story, Alma and Becca immerse themselves in her memory, watching a younger Monse as she spies on Camila and her boyfriend (Santiago Cabrera), who’s a priest.

Unfortunately, Camila and her beau were forced to part ways, and Camila left home altogether.

The following day, Alma and Becca visit Father Reyes. They ask if he’s seen Camila recently. Initially, Father Reyes claims not to know Camila, but Alma catches him in a fib. Father Reyes reveals they broke up years ago. Alma and Becca dive into his memories to confirm this. They watch while he breaks up with their mother after an afternoon of passion. Admittedly, if Santiago Cabrera broke up with me, I’d be a hot mess.

Becca sobs, feeling her mother’s excruciating heartache. Alma and Becca question their grandmother again. While steeped in her memories, the women spot a younger grandma tailing Camila. They arrive at the yellow house from the painting. Grandma confronts Camila, accusing her of living with another man out of wedlock. She spews vitriol at her daughter.

So, our pair decides to visit the yellow house in the present. Alma knocks on the door right as Becca loses consciousness. Uh oh. That’s not good.

“Mexico” puts Becca in the driver’s seat, allowing her to drive the action with her abilities. Interestingly, Becca appears more empathetic than Alma regarding her reaction to memory exploration. Whereas Alma retains more stoicism, Becca viscerally reacts to what she sees.

Becca inadvertently discovering the night of her father’s death in the original timeline will undoubtedly crop up later. For now, she still believes her sister and father are from her timeline.

Why do you think Becca passed out? Will she learn the truth soon enough about Jacob and Alma? Join me next time while I recap Undone, only on Geek Girl Authority.
