After a brief break, The Flash returns tonight on The CW but with some sad news. Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes are leaving after the current season seven ends. The Flash has already been renewed for season eight.
According to Deadline, Cavanagh was originally supposed to end his tenure after season six. Those plans were derailed a bit when the coronavirus shut down production. So far, we’ve seen Cavanagh in a few episodes in the altered season seven. The Flash producers have said Harrison Wells will return, but only in a couple of episodes. Honesty, the third episode of this season was a little too emotional, making me wonder if we’d see Cavanagh again.
As for Valdes, this breaks my heart. Cisco brought a level of pop culture nerdiness unlike we’ve ever seen before. His presence was missed when Cisco when to Atlantis. I was hoping with the addition of Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight), that we might get a new dynamic nerdy duo. Seeing Cisco leave will be the saddest episode of the entire series. Valdes final appearance will be the season seven finale.
“Tom and Carlos have been an integral part of our show for seven seasons, and will be greatly missed. Both are incredible talents who created beloved characters that fans and audiences around the world have come to love. Which is why we are happily keeping the door open for return appearances.” – Eric Wallace, The Flash showrunner via Deadline
That leaves remaining OG cast members Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and Jesse L. Martin to carry the torch. But it won’t be the same. Both actors have portrayed multiple variations of their character, so there is always a possibility that we will see their faces again, but under a different name. At least for Valdes. The last crossover event erased the Council of Wells, but the OG Wells, Dr. Harrison Wells returned. He left after helping Barry (Gustin) retrieve his speed, but there was that one weird moment when he was smiling at someone that wasn’t there … hmmm …
Cavanagh posted the following IG post back in February 2020.
If you’ve been following my recaps, you know that I love Cisco and am fond of any Wells that appears. Both actors are fun to watch and will be greatly missed.
The Flash airs Tuesdays on the CW.
