Quiet and John Doe sit in a car while looking shocked in Twisted Metal Season 1 Episode 9, "R04DK11."

DISCLAIMER: This recap of Twisted Metal Season 1 Episode 9, “R04DK11,” contains spoilers. Read at your own risk.

At the asylum, Sweet Tooth (Joe Seanoa and Will Arnett) and Stu (Mike Mitchell) keep Mike (Tahj Vaughans) as a “pet” with the help of a high-powered shock collar. Dead lawmen everywhere, and Sweet Tooth leaves Mike and Stu in charge of loading ammunition. Mike tries to convince his former friend that the clown is going to get them killed, but Stu stands his ground. When Sweet Tooth returns, Stu attempts to persuade the clown to drop off the map because everyone thinks they are dead.

However, our favorite clown has something more explosive in mind and douses his head in lighter fluid. He then hands a lighter to Stubert and says, “I’ll say when.” Looks like we are finally going to see the classic flaming scalp we all know and love.

John Doe (Anthony Mackie) walks away from what is left of Evelyn, carrying a steering wheel. He finds Quiet’s hatchet nearby and calls himself an idiot. Meanwhile, Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) struggles to simultaneously drive and read the map. Just after she notices a vagina drawn on John’s map, she looks up to see a deer carcass in the road. She swerves, and the car stalls on the side of the road. John goes back to retrieve the package but sees that Quiet has already taken it. After unsuccessfully hot-wiring a nearby junker, some static comes on the radio inside the car.

While Quiet vents to herself out loud about her next move and John exploding, a vulture pulls up behind her. Next, we see them sharing a can of sausages and gossiping about their exes. He eventually pulls a gun on her because he is, after all, a vulture. Before he gets a chance to take the package, he gets a cross bolt to the back of the head. Flower Power (Diany Rodriguez) rolls up in one of the semis from the convoy and offers Quiet a lift.

As soon as Quiet gets into the semi, John apologizes, but Quiet is not having it. Later, John offers Quiet a choice between squirrel or possum to eat, but she pushes the plate onto the ground. Watts (Jamie Neumann) walks by and picks it up, saying it is hard to come squirrel. She then explains that Agent Stone has returned to the dam because of Sweet Tooth’s antics. They will no longer be able to go through the dam to get to New San Francisco. Watts knows of a nearby hole in Stone’s blockade. She says the convoy will take them to the hole but does not want any part in the fight. John says they need to start working on a car, but Quiet makes it very clear she is only tolerating him to get into New San Fransico.

Agent Stone (Thomas Haden Church) speaks to a large group of his officers in front of an enormous wall made of wrecked cars. He says the mute and the milkman are like stray cattle and need to be brought back in line. The officers are the dogs that control the herd. Stone says things will never go back to the way it was before. The crowd cheers and raises their guns, and Stone ends his inspirational speech with, “Bababooey.”

As they patch together a new car out of spare parts, John and Quiet try to talk things out. Quiet explains that she is upset because she thought they were partners, but she is just a passenger riding shotgun. Even though John knew she was tired of losing people, he risked his life anyway for a car.

The next day, Quiet sits in the passenger side to get some work done and notices John has cleared the glove compartment. He even made special holders for her hatchets for easy access. John apologizes again and explains that Evelyn was all he had for over 20 years. He fears being alone again but realizes that he is better with Quiet, and she is better with him.

Just as Quiet begins to accept John’s apology, the rig shakes and alarms go off. Someone on the convoy radio says it is a drive-by, and they are taking fire. The two get down just in time to avoid a spray of heavy artillery all throughout the rig. Several from the convoy immediately radio in casualties and injuries. As everyone loads up on artillery, Watts says they killed three convoy members, and they will be avenged.

John argues with Quiet about the importance of balancing weapons, armor, speed and handling. Too much of one, and you lose the other. If the car is too heavy, it will be slow and handle poorly. He suggests they add armor, but Quiet says they won’t need it if he is fast enough and takes the gun anyway. One seriously considers this when playing the game, so I thought it was a nice touch. John finds a bulletproof glass windshield to put on his new car. As he puts the windshield on, Quiet asks how he learned to work on cars. John says he just tries things until it works, but Quiet insists that someone must have taught him. They argue about whether a skill like driving is natural or not.

The duo finishes the car and starts it up but decides it needs a name. Quiet says the hunk of junk looks like roadkill, and John loves it. John says he wishes they had some tunes, and Quiet breaks out a mixed CD she found in the glove box labeled, “Sex Tunes 4 Tasha.” It is very important to note that all of the letters S are drawn in that 90s “S.” You know which one I’m talking about, which we all drew on our notebooks. John complains that a mixed CD is like Russian roulette. “Epic” by Faith No More comes on, and John says Quiet got lucky. Roadkill and the big rig head towards New San Francisco.

John drives the pack through a large hole blown in Stone’s giant car barricade. Amber notices there are no lawmen around and wonders if they left. They pull into a parking lot with cars spray painted with “Resisted” on the sides. Quiet sees the pink hearse she stole with her brother and realizes that Stone is there. Stone tries to snipe John from a tower, but the bulletproof glass deflects the shot.

A flare shoots from the tower, and suddenly, Stone’s officers reveal themselves in each “abandoned” vehicle. The lawmen rev their engines, and Flower Power radios Watts for help. Watts says a twister is coming, and we see her wearing a purple and white racing suit about to get into a matching drag car. John Doe grabs the gear shift and looks into Quiet’s eyes as she also grabs the gear shift (and John’s hand).

A familiar jingle plays behind them, and several missiles come out of nowhere and blow up a couple of Stone’s lawmen. Our favorite ice cream truck bursts through the wreckage to the tune of maniacal laughter. Sweet Tooth tells Stu to light it up, and Stu ignites the clown’s head. The camera zooms in on a laughing Sweet Tooth, now complete with his iconic flaming head.

Twisted Metal Season 1 is now streaming on Peacock.
