Huck relives past trauma helping Hope deal with hers on The Walking Dead: World Beyond

The Endlings are dealing with a lot of trauma on The Walking Dead: World Beyond. In “Truth or Dare,” Huck (Annet Mahendru) helps Hope (Alexa Mansour) come to terms with her past trauma.

TRUTH OR DARE

Huck left the group to do some recon of the area. She finds a walker with marine gear and takes the supplies she needs, including a pair of combat boots. She gives the boots to Silas (Hal Cumpston). Huck meets the newbies, Percy (Ted Sutherland) and Tony (Scott Adsit). I’m pretty sure she’s the only who notices the chemistry between Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Percy. And the jealousy steaming off of Silas. She is amused by how Elton (Nicolas Cantu) is awed by Tony’s magic tricks. She also finds a bottle of Mountain Dew and shares it with Felix (Nico Tortorella). I think that’s the first time we’ve seen product placement in this show.

Tony shows the group a map from the CRM. It’s blank, but when you use a colored overlay on the map, the drop points show up. Now they know where to find all of the fuel they need to get to New York. But they don’t yet know where in New York. Iris uses the overlay to look at the map that Elizabeth gave to her. She finds an odd looking symbol. Everyone knows that is the research facility, and it’s in Ithaca, New York.

The kids share booze to celebrate, except for Silas. Felix is a little concerned but Tony tells him to let the kids be kids. They have a flask of their own to share. The kids play Truth or Dare, and Percy asks Hope what the worst thing she’s ever done is. Hope says she locked the faculty bathroom and laced the faculty coffee with laxatives. Percy thinks she’s lying and says she has to do something worse than that. This upsets Hope, and she walks away.

Finding the marine brings back memories for Huck. She was a marine once, before the world ended. And she could hit a bull’s-eye playing darts, blindfolded. She was with her friend, Drake (Gil Perez-Abraham), when the dead started walking. Drake was in her troop. He was with her when they were deployed. Huck saved many lives using her infrared equipment to distinguish the living from the dead.

Back to the present, Hope finds Huck on the roof and tells her about killing Elton’s mom. Huck knows about living with that kind of pain, and it’s best to hold it in. Besides, it won’t change anything about the past. She says Hope will have dark days dealing with the truth, but eventually the light will shine.

The group goes to the first CRM drop point to look for fuel and supplies. They split up into groups. Hope goes with Huck and talks about Elton’s mom. She thinks if she can forgive the woman for killing her own mother, maybe Elton can forgive her. Huck says Hope is only telling Elton to help herself. Hope thinks she would be living a lie, but Huck says it’s for the best so that she and Elton can live.

STRANGER DANGER

Felix and Tony find gasoline and log books. Hope disappears, and Huck finds her taken hostage by a madman. His name is Walter. As Huck talks Walter (Paul Teal) down from hurting Hope, she remembers the night her troop got orders to kill anything that walks. Her commander threatened court-martial if they did not follow the orders.

Huck offers herself up as a hostage. She can see that he’s been bitten and says she can save him. He lets Hope go, and Huck is able to get his gun. She grabs him from behind and tries to calm him down. At the same time, she remembers standing in front of the saved civilians with guns on them. Huck turned off the lights, turned on her infrared and killed her fellow troops. Drake was the last one standing in front of her. She told him to lower his gun. His answer was that he was a marine. So she shot him.

Huck kills Walter, too. Hope is confused. Even she believed Huck could save Walter. Everyone else comes running up to check on them. Everyone is safe; they have the fuel and decide to leave.

BACK TO THE BEACH

They find a beach house to stay the night in. The log books are coded. Iris thinks if they decode the books, it could help them find their dad. Tony tells everyone that he and Percy want to stick with them and help the girls find their dad. Percy asks Iris to meet him later in the back of the truck, and she agrees.

Hope tells Huck that she’s decided to keep the truth to herself. She shows Huck the red bead she took from Elton’s mom. Huck says the bead is a reminder about the bad she did — a reminder to keep living to do good. Huck has a reminder, too. After she killed her troop, Huck led the civilians to safety. She cut her cheek to remind herself.

Iris goes to the truck and finds a museum. Percy sets up lighting and sheets around the back of the truck. He cuts out pictures from a book and tapes them to the sheets so it looks like the pictures are hanging on a wall. He leaves more art books in the truck, and Iris starts reading.

Iris falls asleep, and a noise wakes her up. She goes back to the beach house and finds Tony, dead on the floor of the bathroom. His head has been bashed in with Silas’ wrench. There is a trail of blood leading to a door with a broken window. It looks like Percy climbed out that window. There are also tracks of blood in the shape of the marine boots that Huck gave to Silas.

Iris yells for Hope, and everyone comes running. They see someone in a stall. Felix opens the door and finds Silas. He’s holding a bottle of booze. There’s blood on his hands, but he’s not wearing the combat boots!
