Fans of The Vampire Diaries and the vampire genre, are getting a lot of good news today.  It was announced Monday morning, via Deadline, that Netflix has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of V-Wars.  The show will be based on Jonathan Maberry’s bestselling book franchise.  Ian Somerhalder will star and direct episodes.

Somerhalder is coming off of starring in eight seasons of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, where he also directed in the last couple of seasons.  He will star in V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann, who races against time to find the cure to the spread of a disease that has turned his best friend and untold numbers of people into vampires.  V-Wars pilot will be directed by Brad Turner (Stargate and Stargate Atlantis).

There’s no word on the format of the new Netflix adaptation of V-Wars.  The book is a collection of stories chronicling the first Vampire War, and the fracture of society.  It would be cool to see the show be developed as an anthology series, but that is yet to be seen.

There aren’t any dates set for V-Wars, yet.  We’ll keep you updated.  What do you think of the news?
