During Netflix’s TUDUM 2022, we were gifted our first trailer and the release date for Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s upcoming limited series, The Watcher. While the trailer starts off relatively easygoing, it quickly becomes ominous, unsettling and downright creepy. So, of course, it is perfect. And for all of my fellow New Jersians, this one hits really close to home.

The Watcher follows Maria and Derek Brannock (Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale), who have recently moved into their suburban dream home. It’s a happy time for the whole family until threatening letters begin to arrive from someone who simply calls themself “the watcher.” The stranger opens up about their obsession with the house and now the Brannocks. But what do they want? What does the house want?
As The Watcher trailer continues, the easy-going vibe shifts as Maria and Derek begin to realize that the letters and house aren’t their only worry. The entire neighborhood seems to be heading right off the deep end. And this incredible tone shift couldn’t have been done without Margo Martindale, Jennifer Collidge, Terry Kinney and Mia Farrow. They take the term “crazy neighbors” to a whole new level. Plus, did you hear the trailer’s rendition of Olivia Newton-John‘s Hopelessly Devoted To You? We’ll never be able to listen to it without chills running down our spine.

Now, why does The Watcher hit close to home for my fellow New Jersian readers? Because chances are you already know this tale. The limited series is based on the events that took place in Westfield, New Jersey. New homeowners Derek and Maria Broaddus (changed for the series) started receiving ominous letters after purchasing 657 Boulevard. Eventually, the letters became too much, and the Broaddus sold the home. But to this day, no one knows who was really behind it.
Of course, Murphy and Brennan are going to take some liberties regarding their version of events within The Watcher. But it is still really exciting to see yet another New Jersey legend come to life. The series is set to hit Netflix on October 13, 2022. We’ve dropped the new trailer down below. Who do you think the watcher is? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
