Welcome to Tavern Talk Thursday! We are expanding! What started as a column dedicated to chatting with members of the TTRPG community is growing to talk about all things TTRPG and board games. We aim to continue sharing everything we love about the community and all the content within. So, consider this a little peek into our favorite worlds and creators as we explore everything we love.

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes nights of merry and fun. And what could be more fun than enjoying a board game with your closest friends and family? While we love those traditional game night titles like Clue or Monopoly, we have a few that are right up a TTRPG player’s alley. Next time a friend mentions a get-together, grab one of these and spend the night introducing everyone to their new favorite group activity.

Betrayal at the House on the Hill

Kicking off our list is Avalon Hill’s Betrayal at the House on the Hill. This board game is built tile by tile as players move about the haunted mansion, searching for its secrets. Once the secret is unveiled and the haunt begins, the game starts anew. Players have their choice of characters with unique abilities and traits that can either help or hurt the cause. And our favorite part? Plenty of different haunts can take place, making this one replayable at every party this holiday season.

Dungeon!

Are you looking to introduce a few friends to TTRGPs but want to start things slow? We suggest checking out Wizard of the Coasts’ board game Dungeon! with them. Players take on classic Dungeons and Dragons classes like rogues, wizards or clerics and delve deep into a maze full of monsters and treasure. The rules are easy to explain, and gameplay is fast-paced, keeping everyone excited and involved. And while teamwork is undoubtedly something to think about, the real winner is the player who makes it out with the most gold.

Twilight Imperium

Take a trip to space during your next get-together and introduce your friends to Fantasy Flight Games’ Twilight Imperium. This is a game of galactic conquest that pits up to six players against each other. The different factions players can fall into offer unique playstyles they can fully transform into. To achieve the end goal of ruling the universe, players will need to work alongside or against fellow players to obtain what they need. Imagine a table full of players engulfed in their factions vying for galaxy control. It’s pure fun until a war breaks out.

Shadows of Brimstone

Our last recommendation is Flying Frog’s Shadows of Brimstone. Take a time trip back to the mid-1880s  southwest United States. Players take on the roles of gunslingers, banditos, saloon girls or preachers as they face the unspeakable horrors seeping up through the dark mines surrounding Brimstone. Who knew we needed a Lovecraftian horror western board game in our lives? Each playthrough is randomly generated as gameplay flushes out the board, but the campaign system allows characters to grow through multiple playthroughs. This makes it perfect for one-off games or ongoing game nights.
