Time to dust off your fangs, children of the night! According to TVLine, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is spearheading a reboot of HBO’s True Blood. Said reboot will find new undead life at HBO just like its predecessor.
Alan Ball, who curated the original True Blood based on Charlaine Harris‘ Sookie Stackhouse novels, is purported to return as executive producer. NOS4A2‘s Jami O’Brien is expected to pen the pilot script alongside Aguirre-Sacasa. Additionally, O’Brien would also serve as executive producer.

Now, nothing is known as of yet regarding plot details or casting. Will the original core group resurface in Bon Temps? Or will this reboot take place in a different locale with new faces? My assumption is the latter.
True Blood ran from 2008 to 2014 for seven seasons. Ball was the showrunner for five of those seven installments. It starred Anna Paquin as the inimitable Sookie Stackhouse, who lures vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) out of hiding and into a relationship. Sookie’s telepathic abilities incessantly get her in trouble as she delves into the supernatural world of southern Louisiana. True Blood also starred Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Chris Bauer, Carrie Preston, Rutina Wesley, Deborah Ann Woll, Kristin Bauer van Straten and the late Nelsan Ellis.
Is this something we desperately need? I’ve never encountered anyone on social media lamenting that there’s no True Blood reboot. The original ended six years ago. Let’s give this one time to breathe. Plus, part of the initial outing’s charm was the enthralling cast. I’m not sure that magic can be recreated unless Aguirre-Sacasa brings some of the old vamps aboard. The only feasible way this reboot could pan out is if HBO completely revamps it from head to toe. Wash it clean of Sookie Stackhouse references. Wholly extricate the new show from its source material.
I think I’ll stick to re-watching the original True Blood, please and thank you.
