Flynn Rebooted?

Tron fans got some exciting news this week as Jeff Bridges revealed he will return to The Grid in the forthcoming sequel Tron: Ares. On Lincoln Center’s Film Comment podcast, Bridges told the host that he’s headed to set “this Saturday” to play “a role” in the new film.

The actor has, of course, been a part of the world of Tron since its premier in 1982 playing the role of genius computer programmer Kevin Flynn who is transported to a digital world where he interacts with various programs and fights the computer’s evil security program Master Controller.

He returned for 2010’s Tron: Legacy where he reprised his role and also played the film’s antagonist Clu. Both characters appeared to have died at the end of that film, so it’s not clear what role Bridges will play in Tron: Ares. But in a digital world, does anything ever really die? In another clue, Disney posted this pic of Bridges on set and there’s an original light cycle helmet in the background. So perhaps Flynn or Clu or BOTH will return in the new film.

Maher or Bridges

Bridges was featured on the podcast as a lead-up to the 49th Chaplin Award Gala at Lincoln Center, where the veteran actor is will be given the Chaplin Award in recognition of his long career. In the wide-ranging interview, he discussed a number of his films.

When the subject turned to Tron, it made for some interesting discussion of making that original film in the early days of CGI. He also admitted that he didn’t love the digital de-aging that was done to create his character for Tron: Legacy saying he thought he looked more like Bill Maher than himself.

As for how he felt about returning to the world of Tron for the third time, he expressed excitement. Especially about working with the film’s star, Jared Leto saying, “I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”

The film also features Greta Lee (Past Lives, The Morning Show) and Evan Peters (X-Men: Apocalypse, American Horror Story). It’s helmed by Norwegian director Joachim Rønning who has directed other Disney movies featuring titles with colons in them, like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The film is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025.
