The Daily Show’s newest senior contributor, Trevor Noah, has been announced as Jon Stewarts replacement.
The 31 year old comedian made his debut in December and after only 3 appearances on the show, has been asked to host the show.
Comedy Central’s announcement:
Noah joined The Daily Show in 2014 as a contributor. He made his U.S. television debut in 2012 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and has also appeared on Late Show with David Letterman, becoming the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on either late night show. Noah has hosted numerous television shows including his own late night talk show in his native country, Tonight with Trevor Noah.
I have to wonder though, with all of the shake up’s in late night television, your telling me that there wasn’t a single woman who could do the job? Chelsea Handler, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Williams, to name a few. I’d put Tina Fey on that list as well but she’s busy taking over the world.
Comedy Central’s President, Michele Ganeless, said this in an interview:
We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job.
I’m sure Trevor Noah will do just fine hosting The Daily Show and because he’s new I’m sure he’ll be getting his fair share of criticism so I’m not going to do that. My criticism and what I take issue with is that Late Night continues to be a boy club.
I’m pretty sure there’s been enough proof going back to Joan Rivers as The Tonight’s Show’s guest host that women are just as capable to do the job. I guess we’ll see in 15 more years.
