The holidays are a magical time of year. Friends and family gather together to celebrate – just enjoying the season of giving. This year whether you’re hosting or a guest, you can bring a bit of geeky magic to dinner with some of these treats that are sure to wow. The Wizarding World has given us some tasty treats and now you can share them with the ones you love. Here are just 5 of the magical treats you can bring to the party.
Pumpkin Pasties
One of the most perfect desserts for the holiday season is Pumpkin Pasties. Nothing says the holiday season quite like pumpkin flavoring. This treat is essentially small, hand-held pumpkin pies that are just as delicious. In fact it’s one I’m going to attempt to make sometime during the next month or so. This recipe comes from A Few Shortcuts and makes about 6 pasties.
Ingredients:
- 1 Package Refrigerated Pie Dough
- 1 14 oz can Pumpkin Puree
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
- 2 eggs divided
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
- Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out pie dough circle and cut three 5 inch circles of dough out of each.
- In a medium bowl beat together pumpkin puree, sugar, 1 egg, and pumpkin pie spice until smooth. Spoon 2-3 tbsp of pumpkin mix into the center of the small dough circles.
- Fold over the dough circles and pinch them shut to seal. Use a fork to help you if necessary.
- Using a sharp knife cut a small lightning bolt into the top of each pumpkin pasty for venting. Just 3 small slits in a zig-zag pattern.
- In a small bowl beat the second egg. Brush the tops of each pumpkin pasty with the beaten egg.
- Bake the pumpkin pasties for 15 -20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool and serve.
Treacle Tart
Harry Potter’s favorite dessert. You can’t go wrong with it knowing that, right? This recipe is a bit harder in instructions and supplies but the reaction is worth it. In fact, it made the chef sharing it slam his fist on the table because he couldn’t handle just how good it tasted. It also calls for some alcohol so it may be something to keep in mind before making this particular recipe from Babish. It should serve about 6-8 people.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup vodka
- 11.5 ounces all purpose flour
- 1 ounce sugar
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 2 ½ sticks of semi frozen unsalted butter
- 12 inch removable-bottom tart pan
For the filling:
- 16 ounces light molasses
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 3 Tbsp heavy cream
- ¼ cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
Directions:
For the crust:
- Follow steps of the pie crust above.
- Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for an hour or more.
- After it has rested, roll out enough dough to cover the bottom half of a 12 inch removable bottom tart pan.
- Roll dough around rolling pin and unfurl it on top of the tart pan. Lift the dough and press down to get it in all the corners.
- Trim the excess and press into the sides of the pan. Poke some holes in the bottom with a fork, and gently line with aluminium foil.
- Use a pie weight (I used cornmeal) to go on top of the foil and blind bake 15 minutes in an oven at 400°.
For the filling:
- Take 16 ounces of light molasses and combine with 2 Tbsp of butter on a low heat just until the butter melts in a saucepan.
- Add 3 Tbsp of heavy cream and whisk rigorously until the mixture cools slightly, just enough to not cook an egg. Then beat in ¼ cup of bread crumbs and 1 large egg.
- Add filling to baked tart crust and place in a 350° F oven for 45-50 minutes.
- Allow to cool completely.
- Top with whipped cream.
- Serve and enjoy!
Queenie’s Apple Strudel
Before Harry Potter took his first train ride on the Hogwart’s Express, Queenie was impressing with her apple strudel. Now, it won’t take you the flick of a wand to make it, but it’ll just as impressive when you lay this masterpiece out on the table. Granted, the flowers might take you a few times to perfect, but it’ll be worth it in the end. This recipe comes from Hungry Forever and serves about 6 people.
Ingredients:
- 1 Granny Smith apple Cored, peeled and shredded
- 3 Granny Smith apples Sliced
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 Sheet Frozen Puff Pastry thawed
- 1/4 cup Milk

- Mix together the apples, brown sugar, raisins, cinnamon powder and flaked almonds in a bowl. Set aside

- Place apple filling down the middle of the pastry, lengthwise.
- Fold the pastry lengthwise around the mixture and seal the edges with your fingers dipped in a little water, Cut away the excess pastry from the sides.
- Cut the excess pastry into strips and roll them into flowers or braid them to create decorations on top of the strudel. Place the decorative pieces on top of the pastry roll
- Whisk egg and milk together, and brush onto top of pastry.
- Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown.

Ah Pumpkin Juice – something I was so desperate to try I bought four bottles from Universal and paid about $30 bucks for it. Now instead of spending a stupid amount of money for a drink, you can make your own! This copy-cat recipe is very easy to make and includes very little ingredients. However you might have to looks harder for some of the ingredients such as pear nectar. But otherwise you can enjoy this drink from The Dinner-Mom that serves about 3 cups.

Creator’s Note: If you don’t want to buy apple pie spice, make your own blend by combining 1 Tablespoon cinnamon, 3/4 teaspoon allspice, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger.
