Torghast Tower of the Damned is one of the biggest new features in World of Warcraft Shadowlands. In terms of what it is and how it works, it’s notably different from other progression-related events like raids and dungeons, and many players have been left confused.
Before you can start farming in Torghast, you first need to unlock it. You can do this as soon as you reach level 60 and join your covenant. The tower becomes unlocked the moment you complete the first chapter of your covenant’s campaign.
What is Torghast Tower of the Damned?
Put simply, Torghast Tower of the Damned is a new game mode where you make your way through a labyrinth-like dungeon searching for Soul Ash. Soul Ash is a currency you need to craft highly coveted Legendary items in Shadowlands.
The tower itself is a colossal looming structure located in The Maw, a major Shadowlands end-game zone. The Jailer houses his most precious souls here, and you have to climb up to the top of the tower to free them.
It’s a unique type of content because it’s neither a dungeon nor a raid, and it’s also highly flexible. You can enter Torghast solo or with a group, and the difficultly will scale accordingly. If you enter as a tank or a healer, the mobs will scale so you can still defeat them despite your damage drawbacks.
You also get random power gains when you’re in Torghast, called Anima Powers. You collect these as you make your way through the rooms. Anima Powers can be anything from flat stat bonuses to increased crit percentages, higher armor, and so on. These powers can stack, and will get more and more powerful the more you get. When you leave Torghast, the powers disappear.
Torghast is split into wings and corridors. Let’s start with the wings.
There are six different wings, and each wing has eight different layers, and you can think of these layers as difficultly levels. Layer 2 is more difficult than layer one, layer 3 is more difficult than 2, and so on. There are also six floors per layer.
Would a tower be complete without twisting corridors? There are three Twisting Corridors in Torghast, and they essentially function like a special dungeon composed of three wings that you run in succession. They also have eight layers and 18 floors.
The Runecarver’s Chamber
The Runecarver’s Champer is neither a wing nor a Twisting Corridor, but merely a room with an imprisoned runecarver located in it. You unlock this room early on in the Torghast introductory questline. Once unlocked, you can find him by turning right after entering Torghast.
You’ll also come across Break Rooms while on your Torghast runs. These are areas where you can relax and recuperate for a bit. You can visit the vendor Broker Ve’Ken to get some additional Anima Powers or other powerful items in exchange for Phantasma.
Lastly, you have to pay attention to how many times you die. You can enter Torghast as many times as you want, but you get kicked out and sent back to the beginning if you exceed the maximum number of deaths. The number of deaths you are allowed will depend on your group size. For example, if you’re completing the run solo, you’re allowed four deaths, and if you have two players, you’re allowed six deaths.
Why is Torghast Important?
For a few reasons:
- Soul Ash – You need this to create customizable legendary armor.
- It’s where you find the Runecarver – The Runecarver is responsible for making powerful weapons like Frostmourne and Helm of Domination. When you unlock the Runecarver, you can talk to him to craft your own legendary gear.
