SWEET MADNESS THE NEW SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER IS GOOD!

If you haven’t seen it, stop what you’re doing and watch it now. You can see it below.

So what did we love? What did we learn from the trailer?

Here are our top five moments and revelations from the trailer.

First of all, the pacing of the trailer is pitch perfect in tone to the film, which sees bad guys trying to be good. We see lots of fun moments and pitched action as Queen’s classic, Bohemian Rhapsody, underscores the whole piece. In these moments, they’re being heroes, on a mission to save the world from some heretofore unknown threat. However, we also have moments built into the editing where the song drops out which pulls all of our attention to that event. It’s these moments where we see the team being bad — Boomerang punching, Harley being insane and Joker talking about his “toys,” a clear nod to Tim Burton’s Batman.

They also make smart use of the beat of the song to punctuate their explosive sound effects. It really is as if the film is dancing with the music.

That being said, this film is a constant back and forth between the base nature of these characters as “the worst of the worst” and them doing their best to rise above their natures to selflessly save the world.

That last moment from Harley is a perfect encapsulation of the entirety of the film’s tone. As she’s on a mission to save the world, she breaks some glass and steals some jewelry, defending herself by saying, “What? We’re bad guys. It’s what we do.”

BOOM! Perfect.

The effects in this trailer are epic and already in place, giving us plenty of moments to cheer for. Enchantress always has a dark smoke rising out of her, we see Diablo shooting flames from his hands, Katana’s enchanted blade being all magicky with skull-shaped souls floating off of it — it all looks so good and so perfectly realized.

This is a good thing because it gives us a very good idea of what we can expect from the film which isn’t even out until August. They have almost a year to fine tune it and make it look even better than it already does.

The Joker’s look is still very not okay with me. Tattoos and blinged-out cars just do not match my conception of who the character is, but this trailer has me convinced more than ever that he actually might pull off the core concept of the character — base, sinister, intelligent malevolence and chaos.

We still don’t know where he fits into this film. Is he on the team? Is he working against the team? Is he just a flashback to establish him in the DCEU? We don’t know yet, and that’s exactly where The Joker would want to be.

What is that tentacle like gooey mass that they run into a few times!? In one scene it whips out at the team. In another scene we can see some hallways covered in the black gooey mass. But what is it? Rumors have suggested that it’s some sort of necrotic mass related to the evil entity in The Enchantress, real name June Moone, and is trying to take over the world, making Enchantress the actual antagonist of this film. But, we’ll have to wait until August to find out for certain.

Lastly, they have these characters down. Deadshot is the haunted soldier,

Harley
is gleefully insane and

Boomerang
is a terrible coward of a douchebag who’s only in this for the fighting and the beer.

It seems that they have really fully and perfectly realized these characters from the comics — even if the Joker has tats…
