It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Halloween is almost nigh, which means Spooky Season is in full swing! You may recall I made a list of my favorite Halloween-themed TV episodes a few years back. Naturally, I had to return with a second half, because two-parters rule the roost. That, and you can never have too many Halloween posts. Never

Now, in the countless hours I’ve spent binge-watching TV, I’ve noticed that mostly sitcoms take on holiday themes, hence why this list is entirely comprised of TV comedies. They just nail the Halloween spirit like a…nail in a coffin. So, peruse my favorite Halloween TV episodes at your own peril.

1. “Introduction to Statistics” Community (S01E07)

Still of Yvette Nicole Brown in Community's Halloween episode, "Introduction to Statistics."

Community pushed out brilliant themed episodes like it was their job. While Jeff decides to chase “Professor Slim Calves” at a Greendale staff Halloween party, Annie throws a Día de Los Muertos celebration with the rest of the study group. Pierce and Starburns switch medications, causing the former to go on the trip of a lifetime. Chang imparts sage wisdom to Jeff when the latter’s smooth moves fail him. However, instead of going home with the girl, Jeff ultimately helps out his friends. His six children. This episode not only sports some fun Halloween costumes and the start of Abed’s love affair with Batman. It opens the door to Jeff Winger’s cold dead heart and shows us exactly when this study group became a study family.

2. “The Haunting of MoDean’s II” Letterkenny (S03E07)

This Letterkenny episode brought the Hicks to their old pal Gail’s haunted threshold. After MoDean’s burned down, Gail revived the drinking establishment with the christening of “MoDean’s II.” However, she believes the bar is haunted. Enter the Hicks. Gail also points out that Uncle Eddie’s pig hoof hops ale on the shelf could be the culprit. But the gang brings in a slew of suspects just in case “tomf*ckery” is at play. Jonesy and Reilly claim to have watertight alibis since both boys were picking up some babes at the time. Glen, Stewart, and Roald attempt a séance to elicit the spirit of Uncle Eddie. This leads to plenty of tomfoolery and spooky debauchery. Letterkenny style. “The Haunting of MoDean’s II” is laden with running gags, clever wordplay, and Halloween goodness.

3. “Halloween Theft” Superstore (S02E06)

The Cloud 9 gang in Superstore‘s Season Two Halloween episode are urged to be extra vigilant because of the holiday season. Theft is afoot! Dina dons a revealing policewoman costume which makes her the talk of the town. Jonah’s costume is just as pretentious as you would imagine. Dina later interrogates thieving suspects in an attempt to catch a, well, thief. Everyone believes Jonah is crushing hard on Amy. Garrett struggles with burgeoning feelings for Dina. Jeff asks Mateo out on a date. There’s a lot of lovey-dovey malarkey in this episode. But it still contains Superstore‘s trademark tongue-in-cheek humor, which makes it an instant spooky classic.

4. “Halloween” The Office (S02E05)

Still of Steve Carrell in The Office Halloween episode, "Halloween."

The Office led the charge when it came to themed installments and paved the way for future sitcoms to do the same. It’s Halloween at Dunder Mifflin, but despite the festive cheer in the office, Michael has to fire someone by the end of the month. What follows is a series of missteps only Michael Scott can take. After several attempts to fire multiple people in the office, Michael settles on Devon. Devon retaliates by smashing a pumpkin on Michael’s car. Of course, it’s not Halloween without trick-or-treaters, and Michael ends his day by giving out candy. This is a classic episode of The Office in my humble opinion. Rife with its signature dry humor, verbal backstabs, office hijinks, and fun costumes.

5. “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps” Community (S03E05)

Still of Danny Pudi and Gillian Jacobs in Community's Halloween episode, "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps."

This Community episode took the traditional spooky route with “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps.” Britta is now a psychology student who, for an assignment, had her friends take psychological assessments. One particular test revealed that a member of The Greendale Seven could potentially be a homicidal maniac. Thus, Britta puts her friends to the test by having them tell scary stories. Each study group guy and gal regales the rest with tales of the macabre. Some seem innocent, while others are gruesomely detailed. Of course, each story has our GCC heroes as the ill-fated characters. It’s pure Community — kooky, witty, and full of heart. But Halloween style! Not even Britta can Britta that up!
