Weed cartoon characters are unique, crazy, and sometimes downright weird, but plenty of fun to watch. We’ve gathered a list of animated stoner personas, from farmers growing feminized seeds to smoking hot hunks (pun intended).
You might know most of these characters from your childhood favorites. However, seeing them with adult goggles paints them in a new (green) light. Ready to discover our top 10 favorite animated stoners? Let’s get to it.
1. Beavis and Butt-Head
We can’t make this list without the most iconic stoner cartoon: Beavis and Butt-Head. These two socially awkward teens were the original laid-back cool kids. They munched on junk food and openly critiqued TV shows and music videos.
Although they didn’t explicitly show these high cartoon characters smoking weed, there were many cues. For example, when Beavis flips out in one scene, one of the kids asks, “Is he on dope?”
There’s also a scene where Beavis asks Butt-Head if they have any more nutmeg. Every person who smoked weed in the 90s knows the ground spice was something potheads used when they ran out of buds.
2. Shaggy: Scooby-Doo
Scooby-Doo, where are you? Mystery Incorporated is on the way to uncover monsters, but Shaggy’s got the munchies for his favorite meal: Extra cheese pizza with pickles. If that’s not the ultimate stoner meal, we don’t know what is.
He radiates positive vibes, has the chilled-out smoker fashion sense, and he’s a major scaredy cat (perhaps his weed-related paranoia).
The entire Scooby-Doo series and subsequent movies, including Scoob, are suspicious. Nobody can argue that six eclectic personalities dressed in colorful clothing and driving a hippie-themed van aren’t weed-smokers.
Shaggy is an obvious stoned cartoon character, and we’re on to the rest of the crew too. They drive around with a dog that always wants Scooby snacks (it looks like someone forgot to keep their stash out of reach).
3. Bojack Horseman
The well-known horse actor deals with his problems through various substances. He eventually tries CBD oil to help their depression. This show has a somewhat melodramatic tone compared to most happy stoner cartoons, but it’s also relatable.
Many cannabis users try it for the first time because of a medical ailment, and depression is one of the most common reasons. It’s also a reminder that smoking weed doesn’t magically make your problems disappear.
You’re still a human (or horse) with feelings; a joint may relieve stress but won’t unbreak your heart.
4. Jude Lisowski: 6Teen
We don’t see this cartoon character smoking weed, but he does hotbox The Lemon, which makes us believe he’s a major stoner. There are other signs, like:
- His insatiable hunger requires him to scarf down three scoop cones in almost every scene.
- He’s a skater boy who listens to rock bands like the Mighty Weasel.
- He has a cool, trendy aesthetic and casual fashion sense.
- He has a green peace sign tattooed on his left butt cheek; what more proof could you want?
5. Trent Lane: Daria
Every girl in the 90s had a fat cartoon crush on Trent Lane. He plays guitar, has ear piercings, and is tatted. He has that classic stoner hottie aesthetic, a total dreamboat. There’s no clear indication of him smoking weed, but he has an identifiable pot-smoker cough.
Trent’s husky voice sounds like he chain smokes before each episode. There’s also a scene where they eat some suspicious brownies, and he misses his performance slot at a Goth rock show.
6. Brian Griffin: Family Guy
This cartoon is aimed at adult audiences, so there’s no need to be subtle about smoking cannabis. Brian, the family dog, is one of the prominent 420 cartoon characters. He takes fat bong rips on many occasions.
This series is so full of open cannabis consumption that certain anti-weed countries banned it. In one episode, Brian gets caught with marijuana and starts a campaign to legalize it. He and Stevie even have a song called “Bag Of Weed,” and it’s a total bop.
7. Towelie: South Park
It’s evident this is one of those major oddball weed cartoon characters. Towelie is a blue, talking, smoking towel that tries a variety of substances, including cannabis and heroin, and even inhales computer dust.
This stoned towel is very entertaining and even has an evil counterpart, Gary the Evil Towel. Towelie is far from bad, though. Instead, he’s a kindhearted persona who saves the town boys and eventually works on a marijuana ranch.
8. Randy Marsh: South Park
The hemp ranch that Towelie ends up working on, Tegridy Farms, belongs to the Marsh family. Randy is a good representation for all the growers out there who get high off their own supply. He’d probably love some black runtz seeds!
Towelie enjoys working on the hemp ranch, and we see him frequently puffing away. Randy is a character who doesn’t just love weed; he’ll do anything to get it.
In one hilarious episode, he gave himself cancer by microwaving his testicles to get a medicinal marijuana prescription. This scene speaks to the difficulties that recreational users face when cannabis is only permitted for medicinal use.
9. Bender: Futurama
A robot with a crazy streak, Bender has tried everything from alcohol to psychotropic drugs. There are no scenes of him smoking cannabis, but if you know Bender, you know he’s one of the cartoon characters getting high.
If you’re looking for a signal that he’s a weed-loving robot, search #benderjoint on Instagram. You see a bunch of Bender-shaped joints made with love from his many stoner fans.
10. Rick Sanchez: Rick and Morty
Rick is the most intelligent man in every conceivable universe, so smart he made McDonald’s bring back the Szechuan Dipping sauce. Fans know this lovable character has substance abuse problems, from alcohol to drugs. It’s no surprise he’s consumed cannabis.
In one episode, we see him smoking a blunt with Scary Terry (talk about keeping your enemies close). With his super energetic, high-functioning persona, we’d say he’s on some heavy sativas.
