Anyone who was conscious in the mid-90’s in America remembers the Tonya Harding scandal. Figure skating’s one time darling cinderella story turned brutal twisted thug fever dream. Well, that story is coming to the big screen. The redband trailer for I, Tonya was released Wednesday and it’s got a real punk rock, f*&@ you vibe.
Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, and Allison Janney star in this biopic with a middle finger message. Playlist called it ‘The Goodfellas of figure skating’ and that seems to be a pretty good comparison drawn. With voice over from Robbie as Tonya Harding admitting to or trying to debunk events that she’s taking part in, you get a real sense of how this Harding character rolls. Janney plays Harding’s mother, a hard-living task master with a foul mouth. She gets a lot of screen time in the trailer and looks to be totally brilliant and terrifying in this role.
This trailer is fast-paced, hard, hilarious, dark and totally engrossing. I want to see this movie now. Check it out!
Tonya Harding rises through the ranks of competitive figure skating only to find disgrace when her husband tries to eliminate her rival.
I, Tonya will be given a limited release in theaters starting December 8th, with a nation-wide release coming in the beginning of 2018.
