Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. and MGM have announced the release date for the Tomb Raider reboot staring Alicia Vikander. That date is… drumroll please… March 16, 2018.
Well, that’s going to be an exciting few weeks, first Pacific Rim 2 in February then the Tomb Raider reboot in March.
The original Tomb Raider movies, released in 2001 and 2003, starred Angelina Jolie in the title role as explorer Lara Croft. While they did well enough, grossing $432 million worldwide, they were far from a critical success and are generally viewed as falling prey to the video game curse.
The new movie will reportedly be based on the recent game reboot from 2013. The new Tomb Raider follows a younger, less experienced Lara coming into her own. More than likely the movie reboot will go a similar route and we will get an origin story, which we didn’t have for the Jolie movies. No word yet on if they will use the same story as the game or if they will create a new continuity and new story for theaters.
Origin stories are a bit overdone at this point, especially since it seems that every single movie wants to be a franchise to rival the MCU, or have the longevity of Bond and Star Wars. Everything sets itself up for a sequel and I don’t expect Tomb Raider to be any different. However, there is a difference between superhero movies and video game movies, we don’t necessarily need origin stories for everything. There are quite a few superheroes that are part of shared consciousness so we know where they started, Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman come to mind. We know who they are, we know where they come from, no origin needed. There are very few video game franchises, if any, that can skip the origin story part. Although Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and even Warcraft are ingrained into gaming culture they aren’t known to a wider audience.
No sequel to the 2015 Rise of the Tomb Raider has been announced but that doesn’t mean we won’t get one closer to the movie, or to coincide with the launch of the movie. I’ll be surprised if they wait another 2 years before releasing a third game in the series.
