Netflix dropped a bomb on us this morning in the form of a preview trailer for the upcoming series Shadow and Bone. The series is based on the bestselling Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo. It follows a war-torn world where lowly solider and orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) has unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free.
Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone follows Alina as she trains to be a part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. She was torn from everything she knew as the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looms closer. As Alina struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be the same. She also learns that nothing in this lavish world is what it truly seems.

The trailer for Shadow and Bone is simple but definitely gives fans a little something to hold them over. The trailer ends simply with the phrase, “you and I are going to change the world.” The official synopsis for the series simply states, “it will take more than magic to survive.” Both simple statements but carry so much weight. It will be interesting to see what tone the series will take.
Jessie Mei Li is joined by Archie Renaux (Malyen Orestev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey) and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan). Eric Heisserer is the showrunner, executive producer and writer for the series.
