Highlights

  • At an SDCC 2024 panel, Todd McFarlane gave fans an update on the long-awaited Spawn reboot.
  • Several Spawn comic book series also received updates.
  • A special guest announces a new comic series.

King Spawn

Those who follow Todd McFarlane on social media may have already seen the title page of the King Spawn script in the works. According to Variety, McFarlane confirmed that the Blumhouse production now has a first draft written by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Scott Silver (Joker). The Spawn creator praised the screenwriters for making a “badass” script that was guaranteed to be rated R.

More than just a new title, King Spawn will also be a different take on the iconic anti-hero. With Jamie Foxx signed on to play Spawn and a shiny new draft, McFarlane explains that the next step is finding the best director for the project.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we will see King Spawn in theaters anytime soon. However, if Todd McFarlane’s predictions are correct, the success of R-rated comic-based movies like Deadpool & Wolverine could fast-track the next cinematic Spawn adventure.

Comics

McFarlane did not forget about the comic book fans and doled out one update announcement after another. For those who prefer their Spawn between the sheets (of a comic book), there were updates on a long list of titles, including Rat City, No Home Here, Spawn Kills Every Spawn, Medieval Spawn, Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger, She Spawn, The Freak and Violator.

Knights vs Samurai

To conclude the SDCC 2024 panel, McFarlane invited surprise guest David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad) to discuss their new comic book Knights vs. Samurai. Dastmalchian describes the upcoming title as a metal medieval fantasy that sees the worlds of Samurai and Knights clash in a way we have never seen. Expect it to be filled with dragons and oni and witches, oh my.
