Director Toby Haynes is about to enter a galaxy far, far away. Haynes has been tapped to helm the Rogue One spin-off for Disney + that centers on Cassian Andor, Deadline reports. He’ll be at the helm for the first three episodes. Haynes is replacing Tony Gilroy, who was initially slated to be director.
Now, it’s reported that Gilroy refrained from directing for COVID-19-related travel reasons. However, Gilroy will stay involved in the series as executive producer and showrunner.
Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor. Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, and Kyle Soller will round out the cast. The show is already in pre-production. Filming is scheduled to begin next month in the UK.
The Rogue One spin-off will focus on Rebel agent Andor prior to the events of the film. We’ll get a glimpse of the early days of the rebellion against the formidable Empire. When the show was first announced last year, it was described as a “spy thriller.” In addition to Luna returning as Andor, Alan Tudyk will also reprise his role as K-2SO, Andor’s droid righthand man.
Disney + is cashing in on Star Wars properties as of late courtesy of The Mandalorian‘s success. A series revolving around a young Obi-Wan Kenobi is also in production, with Ewan McGregor reprising the titular character.
Haynes directed the Emmy Award-winning episode of Black Mirror entitled “U.S.S. Callister.” Additionally, he directed HBO’s Brexit starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Haynes also has Amazon Prime original series Utopia as a notch in his directorial belt.
