Here comes Barbara Gordon! As reported exclusively by Variety, actress Savannah Welch has been tapped to portray the famous comic book character in Season Three of DC’s Titans!

According to Variety, Barbara Gordon will be working as Gotham City Police Commissioner. This occurs after her days as Batgirl. Unfortunately, she was shot and subsequently paralyzed by the Joker. When we see her in Titans, she’ll be wheelchair-bound. “She has a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne. Her life gets more complicated when Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) returns to Gotham, rekindling their old romance and starting a new crime-fighting partnership.”

Welch is best known for her role in Six, a History Channel military drama. Her other appearances include Terrence Malick‘s critically lauded film Tree of Life as well as Richard Linklater‘s 2014 drama Boyhood. In 2018, Welch had a starring role in the thriller The Transcendents.

Welch is an amputee, losing one of her legs from an accident in 2016. Over the years since she’s been a vigilant spokesperson for the disabled community. In 2018’s Six, Welch’s character Dawn was a Marine suffering from an amputation in combat.

Titans aired its second season back in 2019. The comic series recently made the move from the now-defunct DC Universe to HBO Max. Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth/Raven, Anna Diop as Kory Anders/Starfire and Ryan Potter as Gar Logan/Beast Boy. Greg BerlantiAkiva Goldsman and Geoff Johns serve as executive producers.

Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Barbara Gordon on screen. Yvonne Craig portrayed her in the 1960s Adam West vehicle BatmanDina Meyer took on the character in The WB’s 14-episode drama Birds of Prey. Most recently, Briana Cuoco lent her voice to Gordon in HBO Max’s critically acclaimed Harley Quinn animated series.

I dig that Welch will be a true representative of the disabled community on Titans. Hollywood has a tendency of glossing over marginalized groups in favor of able-bodied, privileged performers. Not to mention, she looks like Barbara Gordon. I’m sure she’ll knock it out of the park.
