According to a report out of Hollywood Reporter, Tilda Swinton is in talks with Marvel Studios to take on one of his more iconic roles in the Doctor Strange mythos — that of his mentor, the Ancient One.
Traditionally, in the comics, the Ancient One has been portrayed as a wizened old Tibetan man living a life of relative seclusion in the Himalayas, so casting Tilda in the role will change up the gender. That said, having an actress of Ms. Swinton’s caliber and relative eccentricity is just about the most perfect casting ever for the role and would bring another level of gravitas and legitimacy to the film.
The last time you saw Ms. Swinton in a comic book movie, it was in the Keanu Reaves picture, Constantine, based on DC Comic’s Hellblazer title. She also won an Oscar for her supporting role in Michael Clayton, which, have you seen that performance? — it’s truly amazing.
Doctor Strange is slated for release in November of 2016, directed by genre director Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role.
