The new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this week with a brand new season. We’ve already seen some of the changes in the trailer and special clips, including a new role for Clark Gregg. Before we begin the season, let’s recap some things that may affect the team in the upcoming season.

Agent Phil Coulson (Gregg) is dead. He lived out his last days with Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) in Tahiti. The new season picks up after the team has had time to mourn Coulson. And though they will never forget him, they do have a job to do. We know there is a man out there who looks exactly like Coulson, but his name is Sarge. And Sarge appears to be nothing like his doppelganger.

Agents Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie (Henry Simmons) is the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He is still in a relationship with Agent Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley). Yo-Yo lost her arms last season and Mack helped her adjust to a new set of arms that make her stronger. I guess the question with these two is, will Mack’s new role interfere with their relationship? She was pretty defiant last season. Mack, Yo-Yo and May remain on Earth to reform S.H.I.E.L.D.

Last season, Agent Daisy Johnson/Quake (Chloe Bennet) got a bit of an upgrade when she was injected with the centipede serum. The big bad at the time, Gravitron (Adrian Pasdar) was more than the team could handle. Coulson was supposed to take the serum to keep himself alive, but relinquished it to help Daisy instead. She is sporting a new blond do this season and a new suit.

Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) was crushed by a building in the battle against Gravitron and died. However, there is another Fitz in this timeline. Fitz put himself in a cryo-chamber to catch up with the team when they were kidnapped and taken to the future. An alien named Enoch (Jeff Stoffer) helped him and travels with Fitz. Simmons’ primary goal is to find the frozen Fitz. With help from Daisy, Agents Davis (Maximilian Osinski) and Piper (Briana Venskus), I am confident they will find Fitz sooner than later.

Speaking of the FitzSimmons family, Deke Shaw (Jeff Ward) not only traveled back in time with the agents, he also figured out that FitzSimmons were his grandparents. He survived the Gravitron ordeal and left to explore the world. The Earth had exploded in his time, so he’s in awe of every little thing he encounters…and Zima…and Daisy. We know at some point he rejoins the team. I wonder if he learned anything useful in his travels?

New characters to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. include Izel (Karolina Wydra), a mercenary who helps Simmons’ team navigate through space. Dr. Marcus Benson (Barry Shabaka Henley), a natural sciences professor who helps the Earth team deal with Sarge. And Malachi (Christopher James Baker), an assassin.  I don’t know whose side he’s on though.

According to The Wrap, AoS will not reference any of the events that has happened in the past two Avengers movies. There is a good reason for that. The AoS writers didn’t know what was going on in Avengers: Endgame and didn’t want to spoil anything. Simple enough.

I’m excited to see a new side of Gregg. He’s pretty good at being the agent, following the protocols and caring about people. Sarge looks like he would be the complete opposite. And I would love for FitzSimmons to end the season on a happy note for once. Just one season where they don’t have to wander if their love will survive.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Season 6 airs on Friday nights on ABC.
