This summer, everything changes. Netflix unveiled a brief teaser for Season 3 of The Witcher, a slew of sneak peek images and the highly anticipated release date. The teaser features Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier.
In the teaser, Geralt tells us that, for the first time, he understands “real fear.” Ciri wanders around in terror, calling out for Geralt and Yennefer. Season 3 will hone in on the magical academy of Aretuza, where Geralt hopes Ciri will learn to control her abilities. However, the Continent is dark and full of terrors (sorry, wrong series), and our titular Witcher and his crew will encounter their fair share of deadly monsters along the way.

If you recall, Season 2 found Geralt whisking Ciri away to Kaer Morhen, his childhood home and the safest place he knows. This is after he believes Yennefer perished in the Battle of Sodden. The Continent’s kings, elves, demons and humans endeavored for power outside its walls while Geralt sought to protect Ciri from herself and her mysterious power.
The Witcher premiered on December 20, 2019, and quickly became a boon for Netflix, rising through the ranks as one of the streamer’s most popular shows. The series was given the Season 3 greenlight before Season 2 dropped on December 17, 2021. In October 2022, Netflix renewed the dark fantasy adaptation for a fourth season but with a twist: Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill as the eponymous monster hunter. According to Deadline, he believed it was time to move on after three seasons of the show. His co-stars renegotiated their contracts for Season 4.

While I’m heartbroken that this is Henry Cavill’s final go-round as Geralt, I’m excited to watch him travel the Continent again. Here’s hoping Season 3 is as bleak and adventurous as the teaser promises. Season 3 will premiere on June 29, with the first five episodes. Then, it’ll conclude with the final three episodes on July 27. It appears to be taking a page out of the Stranger Things playbook.
