Sometimes, you need to slow down and have a serious conversation, even amidst the chaos. We’re privileged to share an exclusive clip from episode two of MGM+’s The Winter King, which finds Nimue (Ellie James) and Derfel (Stuart Campbell) doing just that.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the dark fantasy series per EPIX Press:
“The Winter King is set in the fifth century, long before Britain was united, in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes, where lives were often fleeting. The series follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader.”
The series is an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell‘s The Warlord Chronicles.

Episode 1
Episode one sees High King Uther (Eddie Marsan) banishing his bastard son, Arthur Pendragon (Iain De Caestecker), after the death of his legitimate son, Mordred. Arthur was supposed to be Mordred’s protector. Fast forward eight years later, and we see Dumnonia and Caer Cadarn not in the best state. Uther’s wife, Norwenna (Grace Ackary), gives birth to Mordred II in the king’s attempt to ensure he has an heir before he passes.
Meanwhile, Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) urges Nimue to choose between her love for Derfel and her ability to communicate with the gods. He knows she’ll become a legendary druidess. After being saved by Arthur and growing up in Avalon, Derfel puts down his roots at Caer Cadarn in hopes of reuniting with Arthur. However, Derfel comes face-to-face with the man who killed his mother, Gundleus (Simon Merrells), who’s establishing peace with Uther. Gundleus vows to wed Norwenna after Uther’s death.

Finally, Merlin finds Arthur on the shores of Gaul, hoping to persuade Arthur to return to Dumnonia after his lengthy banishment. After Mordred’s birth, Merlin was struck with visions of the former’s destruction, leading to the downfall of Dumnonia.
A Private Conversation
In the clip, Derfel suggests Merlin’s vision of Nimue’s future isn’t the only way. Maybe Nimue can forge her own path. Nimue voices how conflicted she feels regarding her destiny. Does she want to become an all-powerful druidess or have a family? It’s the age-old dilemma for all women. But we can have it all.
