DISCLAIMER: Mild spoilers abound for the first three episodes of The Wheel of Time Season 3.
The Wheel of Time is finally back on Prime Video for a bigger, bolder Season 3. After that explosive premiere, it’s abundantly clear the stakes are higher than ever. Two characters embroiled in the chaos are Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney) and Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo). Lan finds himself bonded again with Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) as he follows Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), the Dragon Reborn, on a new adventure. Meanwhile, Siuan is left to grapple with the aftermath of devastating betrayal in the White Tower.
Recently, I had the privilege of chatting with Daniel and Sophie about their characters’ respective arcs in Season 3 and what viewers can expect.

Sophie Okonedo on Siuan and Moiraine

Melody McCune: Sophie, I’ll start with you. Siuan and Moiraine have this loving, complex relationship and a really interesting dynamic. What can we expect from that dynamic moving forward in Season 3, and how does it evolve?
Sophie Okonedo: More pain, more love, more frustration — coming together, more heartbreak. It’s the love that just goes on and on and on. I couldn’t really give too much away, but it’s eternal. They are the love of each other’s lives, so there’ll be more of that.
Daniel Henney on Lan’s Bond

MM: For Daniel, now that the bond has been restored between Lan and Moiraine, how does that affect their relationship moving forward, particularly for your character?
Daniel Henney: I think it’s a bit of a relief for Lan and Moiraine to be back on business in the beginning, you know. As they stand outside the White Tower, watching all that transpire from the outside in the first episode, you can see how they are, in fact, reunited, which is nice. But now it’s back to business. It’s back to Rand, what’s happening with him internally, what’s going on.

As you saw [in] the beautiful scene where Rand’s telling Moiraine about this bittersweet thing that’s happening with him, with the corruption inside his body [but] also how he can speak to Lan because Lan listens. They’re still working in concert.
You’re gonna see them back together, and then you’re also gonna see some more difficult life questions from Lan about his past and about potentially walking down that road toward Malkier.
Describe The Wheel of Time Season 3

MM: For both of you, describe Season 3 using three words.
DH: [to Sophie] Oh, you want one? I’ll take one.
SO: I’m not able to. That’s four. [laughter]
DH: Chaos. Love. [to Sophie] You got one?
SO: Betrayal.
MM: Oh, betrayal. Those are great ones.

Choose Your Ajah
MM: My last question is if you, as Sophie and Daniel, could pick your own Ajah to join, which would you choose?
SO: Oh, that’s a good question.
DH: I’m gonna be really elementary about this and pick green simply because I feel like I’m in my green period of my life. Everything I like is green right now. I like green cars. I’m wearing a green jacket. I’ve got a green bracelet on, so I think I have to go with green at this point.
SO: I’ll say yellow.
MM: I would, too; I’d take yellow.
SO: I feel that would be, in these times, a good quality. [laughter]
Thank you, Sophie and Daniel, for chatting with GGA!
