The Wheel of Time finally announced who Maria Doyle Kennedy and  Daryl McCormack are playing in Amazon Prime’s epic fantasy series based on the books by Robert Jordan. I admit fully that all my guesses were incorrect!

Kennedy, McCormack and Narinda Samra will be playing Tuatha’an. The Tuatha’an are also referred to as the traveling people or tinkers in the book series. They are nomadic and travel in brightly covered wagons searching for anyone who may “know the song.” They are a peaceful, non-violent people who follow the Way of the Leaf. This philosophy demands that a Tuatha’an will never raise a hand to hurt another or even to defend themselves. Even with their peaceful existence, outsiders assume that they are thieves and all around bad folk.

Maria Doyle Kennedy will play Illa. Narinder Samra will play Raen. Daryl McCormack will play Aram. In The Wheel of Time’s first book, The Eye of the World, two of our protagonists find shelter with the Tuatha’an .

Without giving any spoilers, I’ll say that McCormack will make an excellent Aram. Aram is a young, handsome and flirty Tuatha’an. Illa and Raen are his grandparents and leaders of their band of traveling people. As for Kennedy playing Illa, she will be wonderful of course but I admit I was hoping she’d play a character with a much larger role in the first season. But, she is Maria Doyle Kennedy which means she’s going to be excellent! And Illa, Raen and Aram are important as the book series progresses.

The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan’s fantasy series spanning 14 books. The final three books in the series were written by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s passing. It is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the “Aes Sedai” as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine is interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it.

Executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins adapted the novels for television Executive producers also include Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, Darren LemkeMarigo Kehoe and Uta Briesewitz.  Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal and Sanderson will serve as consulting producers.
