The Walking Dead regular Christian Serratos is in negotiations to star in Netflix’s Selena: The Series. Vulture reports Serratos has been cast as Selena Quintanilla, a Tejano singer murdered by her business associate in 1995. Netflix planned out two seasons of the show.
Selena: The Series is a coming of age story of Selena, following the singer’s choices as “young music and fashion icon.” The singer’s story was first told in the 1997 biopic, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez. Selena was the first Latin artist to reach the Billboard 200 posthumous with her album Dreaming of You. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., sister Suzette Quintanilla, and family attorney Simran A. Singh serve as executive producers with Moisés Zamora.
What about Rosita?
Rosita fans have to wonder what this means for Serratos’ status on The Walking Dead. Serratos has portrayed Rosita for six seasons on TWD. The TWD family took a few big hits in the past two seasons with the departure of Andrew Lincoln and the impending exit of Danai Gurira
It could be a matter of Serratos taking a break from TWD, however, Lauren Cohan took a break from the zombie apocalypse to star in ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier. That show only lasted one season and Cohan’s TWD status is still up in the air. Corey Hawkins also took a break from TWD to star in 24: Legacy and has yet to return to the show.
It will be interesting to see what happens. As a fan of Rosita, I was hoping she would have a bigger role in the next season and she still could. With Gurira leaving, TWD really needs to keep some of that girl power.
Selena: The Series is scheduled to start filming in October.
The Walking Dead returns October 6 on AMC.
