The Walking Dead returns next week and it’s about time. The mid-season finale was intense, ending on one of the biggest cliffhangers of the series.  Before we can move forward, we need take a look at what was going on that had viewers’ hearts racing.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) met Virgil (Kevin Carrol) at an abandoned library and then again at Oceanside.  Virgil is from a naval base, two days from Oceanside. They have weapons there that could help take care of Team Family’s Whisperer problem.  All Virgil wants is to get home to his family. He offers up the weapons for a boat. Michonne was last seen on a boat with Virgil.

The community was devastated when Siddiq (Avi Nash) turned up dead and his killer turned out to be the other doctor, Dante (Juan Javier Cardenas).  Alpha (Samantha Morton) planted Dante in Alexandria to keep an eye on them and report back to her. There was alway something a little off about Dante and Siddiq figured it out too late. Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) killed him before he could speak to anyone else. Now the community is on high alert and suspicious of everyone.

Alpha sent Gamma (Thora Birch) to get information out of Aaron (Ross Marquand).  She started out by just talking to him, but when Gamma tried to get rough, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Lydia (Cassady McClincy) showed up.  Gamma was so shocked to see Lydia. Alpha told Gamma that she sacrificed her daughter for the betterment of the Whisperers.  Gamma realized that Alpha was lying to her and she turned on her leader.

Gamma revealed her name is Mary.  And the baby that was left at Hilltop is her nephew.  She asked Aaron if she could see the baby, but Aaron didn’t trust her. To gain his trust, Gamma told him where Alpha is keeping her herd. After everything that just happened with Dante, the community has a hard time trusting Mary.  But Carol is eager to stop Alpha, so they decide to check it out.

Daryl (Norman Reedus) questions Carol’s state of mind.   Since Henry died, Carol has been vengeful and reckless.  She is so determined to hurt Alpha that she jumps at every chance to do so. When Carol used Lydia to expose Alpha’s lies to Gamma, Lydia left Alexandria.

When they get a location for the herd, Daryl asked Carol to stay behind.  She insists on going, so Daryl takes Aaron, Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Magna (Nadia Hilker), Kelly (Angel Theory), and Jerry (Cooper Andrews) to check the place out. The herd is not in the place where Mary said it would be, but Alpha is there. Carol sees her and runs after her, causing everyone to follow.

Alpha leads them into a cave. It’s a trap and Carol was too blind to see that. One by one, Daryl and his group ran into the cave and fell into a hole. The cave is full of walkers…the only thing keeping Team Family safe is the small ledge over the walkers.

TWD wastes no time jumping back into the story when season ten resumes.  In “Squeeze,” Daryl and his group fight to escape Alpha’s trap.  Will everyone get out alive?   And Alpha prepares to make a big move on Team Family, but first she has to deal with Negan.

In “Stalker,”  Alexandria faces the scariest foe of all…an unseen one.  And Alpha encounters a familiar face that reinforces her will to destroy Team Family.

The first two episodes of TWD’s mid-season return are suspenseful and captivating, reminiscint of the early TWD days.  Except this time, we don’t know what to expect.  Since the show deviated from the comic book series, anything goes.  Oh and be sure to turn off the lights or turn up the brightness on your TV. Things are pretty dark in “Squeeze.”

This season is some of the best storytelling this show has ever had.  The war isn’t as bloody, but Alpha’s scare tactics are effective. Something tells me this war is going to have some major casualties before the end.  If it ends like it does in the comics, things are about to get crazy for both sides.  Check out the TWD midseason teaser below.
