Last week was one of…if not the hardest death to accept on The Walking Dead. RIP Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs). Carl’s death will be felt for some time now. He left several letters for members of his apocalypse family.  Only time will tell if they heed his message of peace. In the meantime, there is still a war going on. People are still making moves. Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Enid (Katelyn Nacon) went to Oceanside to convince them to join their side. Enid killed their leader. So how will this affect a possible alliance? In “The Lost and the Plunders,” Rick (Andrew Lincoln) has to pick up the pieces and move forward. The Saviors are already making plans, but there seems to be some dissension in the ranks.

MICHONNE

The morning that Carl died, Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) buried him in Alexandria. Michonne stands by while Rick mourns his son in silence. She hears walkers approaching and investigates how many and how close they are. The gates are open, so she runs to close them. The walkers meet her at the gate. She kill a few of them, but there’s too many to deal with.

Rick takes a radio off of a dead Savior. They go to their house to pack up some things. Michonne sees Carl and Judith’s handprints on the porch and starts crying. She stops when she hears more walkers headed toward her. Michonne tells Rick that it’s time to go. They load up the van and Michonne gets emotional when she see the gazebo on fire. Carl liked sitting at the gazebo. They run to put out the flames and barely escape the walkers. They drive out of Alexandria and Michonne looks back in sadness. Their home is gone.

Rick thinks about the things that Carl said. He’s not so sure that they can all stop fighting. Michonne suggests that they read Carl’s letters, but Rick is not ready. Michonne looks through the letters and finds one for Negan. Rick changes the subject. He says he needs to talk to Jadis. Rick says they have guns and people. And they will be a target of the Saviors because they were with Rick at the Sanctuary. When Michonne and Rick get to the Scavengers junk yard. As soon as they go inside, a bunch of trash falls in front of the door. Walkers descend on them. All of the walkers are the Scavengers.

SIMON

Simon (Steven Ogg) checks in with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) about how he left the Hilltop community. They are waiting to hear from Gavin (Jayson Warner Smith) in the Kingdom. Negan instructs Simon to send a message to the Scavengers. Simon is more than happy to get rid of the Scavengers, but that’s not what Negan wants. He believes people are a good resource. He tells Simon to only kill one person so that the others fall in line.

Simon doesn’t like it. He tells Negan they need to cut their losses. He doesn’t think Rick and his people are capable of learning their lesson. Simon thinks they should just move on from this war and look for other communities to save. Negan says saving people is hard, but it works. Simon disagrees. Negan says once he gets rid of Rick, everything will go back to the way it was.

They are interrupted by some of the guards who bring in the casket from the Hilltop. Negan dismisses his men and has Simon help him open the casket. Negan kills the walker that is laying inside. Simon says the walker is Dean is from the satellite outpost. Those are Simon’s people. He says they can’t let Hilltop get away with this. Negan lays down the law and yells at him to do his job.

ENID

The Oceanside guards take Aaron and Enid to a house and cuff them to the radiator. Beatrice (Briana Venskus) tells Cyndie (Sydney Park) that it’s up to her what they will do with them. Rachel (Mimi Kirkland) tells Cyndie to kill them. They all leave the room to discuss. Aaron tries to talk to Enid telling her it will be okay. She says that Natania (Deborah May) made it where Enid had to kill her. And she would do it again despite the way she feels.

The ladies return and remove Aaron and Enid from the radiator. Beatrice tells the others to take them to the beach. Aaron tries to reason with Cyndie. Enid speaks up saying that killing them won’t help things. It will only get worse. She says their people will come looking for them and eventually wipe out the Oceanside community. Enid tells Cyndie to let them go. Cyndie agrees and they lead Enid and Aaron out of their community. Enid and Aaron try to talk them into fighting with them instead of hiding from everyone. Cyndie tells them not to come back

Aaron sends Enid back to the Hilltop. Enid protests and offers to stay with him. Aaron tells her to let Maggie (Lauren Cohan) know what he’s doing, but tell her not to come for him. He says he can’t leave until they join the fight. Enid says okay, but he has to promise that she will see him again. They hug and Enid leaves Aaron in the woods.

SIMON

Simon gathers his men and they head to the Scavengers. The Scavengers go on the defense as soon as Simon arrives. He tells them to lower their guns. He’s just there to talk. Simon tells Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) that they know she flipped sides and now they want an apology. Jadis says they didn’t help Rick. They captured him and brought him to the Sanctuary. Simon knows she’s lying, but gives her another opportunity to apologize. He also says they are taking their guns and ammo. Tamiel (Sabrina Gennarino) protests saying they need the guns for protection. Simon assures them that the Saviors will be there to help them.

Simon admires a painting of a cat that Jadis did. He asks why she lives in a dump. Jadis replies that it’s their place. Simon asks why the place has a helipad and solar panels. Jadis stick with her story that the place is a dump. Simon gets frustrated, but smiles and ask if she even knows. Jadis tells him to take his guns and go. Simon says he never got an apology and she never expressed any remorse. Simon kills two of the scavengers because Jadis won’t apologize. Jadis hits him, knocking him to the ground and screams that they have remorse. Simon gets up and tells his men to kill the Scavengers.

Simon and his men return to the Sanctuary where Negan is waiting for them. Negan is a little worried that they haven’t heard from Gavin, but he sent someone to check in on him. Negan asks how things went. Simon lies and says it was a standard message delivery and there was remorse. A lackey interrupts them and tells Negan that Rick is on the radio.

JADIS

Rick and Michonne climb a heap of garbage to get away from the walkers. They find Jadis sitting on top of the heap. They ask her how to get out, but she said the only way out is the only way in. She tells them that the Saviors killed everyone. (And she’s using complete sentences!) Jadis talks about why they chose to live in the junkyard. She says it was a canvas and they were the paint. It was their world apart from everyone else.

Rick says she is to blame for everything that happened. He picks up a car door and prepares to run through the walkers to get out. Jadis wants to go with them, but Rick says he’s done with her games. Rick and Michonne make their way through to the door. Jadis is behind them, but gets cut off by the walkers. She begs them to help her get out. Rick shoots at walker behind her and they leave. Jadis has to run back into the heaps to get away from the walkers.

Later, Jadis taps a rod on a metal surface, getting the attention of the walkers. Once they get to the top, she turns on a machine. One by one they all fall into a grinding machine.  Jadis watches in disbelief as her whole community is destroyed. Afterward, she sits down and eats a can of applesauce.

RICK

Rick feels bad about leaving Jadis behind. He makes excuses for why he did. Michonne says this is what Carl is talking about. Rick gets choked up. He has to stop the car and get out. He takes Carl’s letters and the radio with him. Rick reads his and Negan’s letters. He radios the Saviors and asks for Negan.

Negan gets on the radio and tries to start taunting Rick. Rick immediately tells him that Carl is dead. Negan is shocked. Rick says Carl wrote Negan a letter asking for peace. Rick says it’s too late though. He won’t make any deals. Rick is going to kill Negan. Negan asks how Carl died. He thinks it was his bombs that killed Carl and he feels really bad. Rick tells him that Carl went out to help someone and got bit. Negan is upset. He offers his condolences and says he had plans for Carl. Carl was the future.

Negan asks why he is still fighting. He says Carl is dead because Rick wasn’t there to stop him from doing something stupid. Negan says he stops people from dying. And it’s time for Rick to accept that. He says he killed Rick’s friends so he could save them all. Rick’s decisions are what caused his people to die. Rick failed as a leader and as a father. He tells Rick to give up, because he’s already lost. Rick walks around in a field in disbelieve.

Thoughts

I think Rick should have taken more time to grief before he told Negan about Carl. At least tell the rest of his family what happened. Family first Rick! Family first.

I like what Aaron is thinking, I just hope it doesn’t take the next six episodes for him to convince Oceanside to join them. And it was a good idea to send Enid home. She probably shouldn’t have gone with him in the first place, but someone needed to know where Aaron ran off to. He should have taken time to grieve as well. Eric just died, like the day before!

RIP Scavengers. I’m sure they had a purpose, but it was never revealed in the show. That was a pretty brutal way to go. Simon always seemed reasonable. I was shocked that he killed them all. Is this the last we see of Jadis? Or will Jadis go to Negan and tell him what Simon did? Or will she follow Rick and try to redeem herself? And what was that place before? Simon mentioned the helipad and solar panels. Remember back in “The Big Scary U,” Rick saw a helicopter fly over his head. We haven’t heard anything about it since.

This story is still moving slow…settle in folks, we got 6 weeks to go before we find out the fate of Negan.
