THE WALKING DEAD Recap (S11E02): Acheron: Part 2

Noetta Harjo

Whoa, whoa, whoa! The Walking Dead season 11 is starting off on the wrong foot. With Alexandria trying to rebuild, tensions run high because food is scarce. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) had this great idea to go back to Meridian to get the leftover food from there.  A storm caused the group to take a detour to death and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) started questioning Maggie’s authority.

In “Acheron: Part 2,” things get really bad when Negan leaves Maggie hanging and Daryl (Norman Reedus) is separated from the group. Eugene (Josh McDermitt) goes through all kinds of emotions trying to stay cool.

Negan could have lent a helping hand to Maggie, but the fact that she wants to kill him doesn’t sit too well with him.  Maggie is okay though. If anyone can fight off a group of walkers, it’s Maggie Rhee. But when the rest of the group wonders about her whereabouts, Negan does nothing but lie.

Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) realizes the Commonwealth is real after doubting it last week. She realizes that they have structure and laws. And she speaks their language. Princess (Paola Lázaro) is skeptical, but Yumiko wants to take the risk. Eugene joins them, freaking out because Ezekiel (Khary Peyton) is missing. He wants to tell the auditors the truth. Yumiko calms him down, but confronts their guards, asking to speak to the manager!

Daryl got separated when he chased down Dog and found some interesting things in the tunnel. People lived down there for years. Some of them brought money, some brought pictures, and some brought candy. He also finds drawings on the walls of the fall of the world. Daryl hears a man scream in the distance. Dog hears the man too. He starts barking and takes off to find him.

Yumiko confronts the auditors about who’s assessing who. She knows they have a stable community and they have to protect it. So anyone who these people encounter is dragged through the ringer to make sure they won’t mess up the community. Yumiko says her brother is possibly living in their community. She asks for expedited processing for herself and her group. Mercer (Michael James Shaw) enters and gives Yumiko a cup of coffee.

Princess and Eugene are waiting outside for Yumiko. Princess has to use the bathroom really badly, but Eugene doesn’t want to split up. She says they just saw the “fine ass dude in the orange suit,” take a cup of coffee to Yumiko so things have to be going good. Princess talks to the guards in Spanish, asking for the bathroom. She gets really excited when she finds out they have toilet paper. The guards look at Eugene and one of them follows Princess into the bathroom.

Daryl follows Dog into a narrow crawl space while the others make their way through the subway train. They can hear the walkers banging around them. Someone starts banging in Morse Code from the floor. It’s Maggie. And she’s pissed. Maggie punches Negan for leaving her to die. That sets off the rest of the group. He tries to justify his actions, saying he did what he had to do. She wants to kill him and probably will. He on the other hand is an asset to them. He may have helped burn down Hilltop but he killed Alpha. The end justifies the means. But everyone is loyal to Maggie. All she has to do is nod and someone will kill Negan for her.

Gage finds himself in a sticky situation on The Walking Dead

They hear Gage (Jackson Pace) call for help outside of the car. Gage ran off in the last episode, obviously running into the group of walkers. Now he’s back, but they can’t help him. If they open the train door, the walkers could get in.  Gage is done for. Alden (Callan McAuliffe) tries to help, but no one else does.

Gage pleads with Maggie to let him, but she can’t risk it. They don’t have the ammo to clear the walkers.  Alden tries again, but everyone holds him back. Maggie tells Gage that she is sorry, but he calls her a liar. He takes a knife and stabs himself in the chest, staring at Maggie while he does this. When he pulls out the knife, the walkers reach Gage and devour him.

Eugene is by himself and getting really nervous. He goes to check on Yumiko, but the guard says no one is in the room. He asks about Princess, but the guard knows nothing about her either.  Thai is the guard that told her where the bathroom is. Eugene leaves, but he’s seriously about to lose it.

Negan gets claustrophobic as their flashlights go out. Gage reanimates but no one will look at him. He feels bad for the kid saying he didn’t deserve to die that way. Maggie says there are worse ways to die. She tells them a story about finding mutilated people in an old house. She was only concerned about the food those people had and took it. And she didn’t feel bad about it. All of that to say that what they have at Alexandria is rare and worth fighting for. Negan says they are lucky because it means that no one has figured out how to create a stable community. And  no one ever will.

A walker finds Daryl in the crawlspace, but he’s able to get away. He finds a trail of blood and hears Dog barking in the distance. Dog found Roy (C. Thomas Howell). Roy was attacked and is badly hurt. He got topside, but lost Gage and the ammo.

Maggie’s people open one of the doors going into the next subway car, but the second door is blocked. As they decide what to do, the walkers on the other end of their car start to break through. They continue working on the second door, but the other door won’t hold. The walkers break through led by Gage’s corpse. Everyone starts shooting to hold them off. Daryl hears the gunshots and starts running back to the train.  When they run out of ammo and arrows, Alden, Cole (James Devoti) and Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari) start fighting them off by hand. There are more walkers in the next car. Maggie hands a gun to Negan and he leaves to help clear the next car. They keep fighting, but there are too many walkers.

Daryl arrives in the next car behind the dead walking towards Negan. He takes them out for Negan, having just enough ammo to clear the car. He removes the blockade and opens the door for the others. Once on the other side, Daryl stuffs a grenade in the mouth of a walker and closes the door. Blood splatter is everywhere.

Later that night, the generic stormtroopers take Eugene back into the interrogation room. He’s been alone for a while and will probably break. It doesn’t help that Mercer is in the room and tells Eugene not to lie. But he likes Eugene … I guess. Mercer has only two questions. Where is their settlement and why were they at the train station? Eugene admits that he’s holding back the truth. He tells them about finding the radio and stumbling upon Stephanie’s voice. He basically fell in love with her and hoped she would take his V card.  As for everything else, some are lies, but he says it’s the truth.

The next morning, the guards take Eugene back to a train car, where everyone is waiting for him. I’ve never seen him so happy to see his friends.  They were just as worried about Eugene as he was about them. But they are all okay. Mercer comes in and lets them know that they have been granted access to the Commonwealth. Another woman enters and asks for Eugene. He raises his hand. The woman looks at him and says she’s Stephanie (Chelle Ramos). Is it really?

Maggie and Daryl’s group reach the topside at night. Daryl found a bill with a note on it and kept it. He looks it over as everyone emerges from the tunnel. Negan gives the gun back to Maggie. Maggie says they are taking a detour to a supply depot that Georgie set up in case her people ran into trouble. The depot is at a place called Arbor Hills. It has food, ammo, and weapons. Negan knows where it is and leads the way.

Along the way they find bodies hanging upside down from the trees. They are all standing under a street light. Negan suggests the double back but before he can complete his thought, someone throws several knives at the group. Daryl looks up and sees several men walking toward them.
