On the Walking Dead, “Something They Need”, Rick and his group visit Oceanside community. Sasha’s plans are derailed. Negan plans something big for Rick.
It’s getting crazy, ya’ll….Spoilers ahead.
Tara (Alanna Masterson) tells Rick (Andrew Lincoln) about the guns at Oceanside. Oceanside is a community of women who were terrorized by the Saviors. After the men in their community were killed, the women took their guns and families and set up a new community at resort near the ocean. It is well hidden behind some woods.
Tara stumbled upon the community. She saw that they have a shed full of guns. There’s more than enough for everyone.
Rick and a group of Alexandrians and Hilltop residents make their way through the woods, armed and with boxes of explosives. At the same time, a boat has washed ashore and the walkers are roaming the beaches.
Hilltop
Maggie (Lauren Cohen) teaches Eduardo (Peter Luis Zimmerman) how to garden. He hears her instructions and calls her boss lady. Gregory (Xander Berkeley) overhears the exchange.
Maggie leaves to dig up a blueberry bush she saw outside of the gates. Gregory follows her.
Oceanside
Enid (Katelyn Nacon) asks Carl (Chandler Riggs) if he ever thought about the people he has killed. He says yes.
Rick helps Michonne (Danai Gurira) climb into a tree.
Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Eric (Jordan Woods-Robinson) keep watch. Aaron is glad that Eric joined them. Eric says he understands why they are there.
Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), Tobin (Jason Douglas), Scott (Kendrick Green), and Francine (Dahlia Legault) are also with them.
Jesus (Tom Payne)and Daryl (Norman Reedus) set up explosives. Jesus feels bad about letting Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) go to the Sanctuary. Daryl says that Sasha is a good shot. They can take care of themselves. For all they know, they are back at Hilltop now.
Sanctuary
David (Martinez), a Savior, opens the door to Daryl’s old cell. Sasha is inside, tied up and laying on the floor. David asks her if she need anything. Sasha asks for water. David is a creep. He starts taunting Sasha saying he will help her, as long as she helps him. He calls her pretty and tears her shirt. Sasha head butts him to defend herself. David threatens her and starts to unbutton his pants.
Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) shows up and stops him. Negan says that rape is against the rules and kills David for trying. He tells his other lackey to get a new shirt for Sasha. Negan apologizes for killing David in front of her. She pulls back from him and he recognizes her. Negan asks Sasha if Rick put her up to attacking him. She calls Rick Negan’s bitch and says no.
Negan says he’s in impressed with Sasha’s ‘beach ball size lady nuts.’ He unties Sasha, gives her a knife and some options. She can use the knife to kill herself before walker David reanimates. Or she can use the knife to kill walker David and save herself. If she uses the knife, she has to join the Saviors. Negan tells her that they are not monsters and leaves her to think.
Later, Eugene takes provisions to Sasha. Sasha asks what Negan did to Eugene. Eugene says he keeps him safe. Eugene tells her that he’s never been as scared as he was the night they met Negan. Joining Negan ensures that he will never be that scared again. He encourages Sasha to accept Negan’s offer. He says it’s the right choice.
Sasha tells him to leave and David starts to reanimate.
Hilltop
Gregory approaches Maggie as she digs up the blueberry bush. He apologizes for not accepting her. He proposes that they need to present a united front for the sake of the community. Maggie says she will consider it.
They hear something moving in the bushes. Maggie asks Gregory to look out for walkers. She says she need to finish digging. He agrees. While she’s digging, Gregory contemplates killing Maggie. He gets scared and doesn’t do it.
A walker emerges from the woods. Gregory insists that he can kill it. He goes after the walker…gets scared…turns and runs away. Maggie takes care of the walker. Another walker jumps out at Gregory, knocking him down. He screams for Maggie to help him.
Maggie saves Gregory and a group of Hilltop residents sees them. Maggie explains that Gregory is learning to kill walkers.
Oceanside
Tara manages to sneak into Natania’s house. She holds Natania (Deborah May) and Cyndie (Sydney Park) hostage. She tells them that she brought her people. They are going to take the guns. She asks Natania to join them in their fight against the Saviors. Natania says no. Tara asks her to talk to Rick. Cyndie tries to convince Natania, but she stills says no. Tara tells them time is up and an explosion happens outside.
Everyone runs except Beatrice (Briana Venskus) and Kathy (Nicole Barré), who run for the guns. Michonne shoots a warning shot at Beatrice and Kathy. Daryl, Jesus, Aaron and Eric capture them and take them to join the rest of the community.
Tara tries to get Natania and Cyndie to go with her to talk to Rick. Natania fakes an injury to overthrow Tara. Cyndie gets a gun and points it Tara. Tara gives up her gun, telling them that it’s empty. They didn’t want to hurt anyone.
Rick and his people tell the Oceanside community that they don’t want to hurt anyone. They are just going to take the guns.
Natania joins everyone with a gun to Tara’s head. Michonne targets Natania and Tara tells her to not shoot.
Cyndie mentions to her community that Rick and the others are going to fight the Saviors.
Natania is sure that no one can win against the Saviors.
Tara tells her that they are taking the guns and they are going to win. Tara tells Natania if she kills her, Natania will die next. And Rick will still take the guns.
Beatrice and others want to join the fight against the Saviors. Natania tells them no.
Michonne calls out to Rick that walkers are approaching. Cyndie hits Natania to keep her from killing Tara. Enid was behind Natania, ready to shoot her to stop her as well.
Rick gets all of the women behind everyone with guns. He unties Beatrice and Kathy and hands them knives. The two groups work together to kill all of the walkers, keeping everyone safe. One of the walkers grabs Tara. She throws it to the ground and Cyndie kills it.
Afterward, Beatrice hands the knife back to Rick. She shakes his hand.
Natania leaves the group saying they will not fight.. She tells them to take the guns and leave.
Sanctuary
Negan opens the closet door. He smiles when he sees Sasha standing there. She killed the walker and saved herself. She says he wins. He tells her that she actually won. He takes the knife from Sasha saying she has to earn it back. She has a long way to go before he will trust her. But he will make it fun.
Negan says he knows that Rick is up to no good. He’s going to use Sasha to change what is happening. They will go see Rick the next day.
Hilltop
Gregory is still uneasy about his near death experience that Maggie saved him from. He looks at the note that Simon (Steven Ogg) gave him. Gregory pulls out a map of Virginia. He calls for Kal (James Chen) and tells him to pack a bag. They are going for a drive.
Sanctuary
Eugene visits Sasha again to welcome her to the group. Sasha tells him she made the wrong decision. She says Negan is going to use her to hurt their friends. Sasha asks Eugene to get her something, a knife, razor, glass…anything she can use to kill herself.
Eugene tries to talk her out of it, saying he will help her to adjust to life at the Sanctuary. She insists that she cannot let Negan use her to hurt anyone. The only option is for Sasha to kill herself. Eugene says he will consider her request and leaves. Inside the closet, Sasha looks satisfied with her performance.
Oceanside
Gabriel asks Rick if its necessary to take everything. Rick says yes. They load everything up as Oceanside watches.
Cyndie tells Tara that she and others want to go with them. Natania won’t allow anyone from Oceanside to fight for them; it’s everyone or no one. Tara thanks her for saving her life time and time again. Cyndie thanks Tara for what their group is about to do.
Carl and Enid carry off a box of guns. He tells her that he thinks about the people he didn’t killed too.
Rachel (Mimi Kirkland) follows Tara and asks if they are going to leave any guns for them. Tara says no and flip her the bird. Rick sees this and asks Tara if she’s okay. She tells Rick that he was right and she doesn’t have to feel bad.
Sanctuary
Eugene returns to grant Sasha’s request. He gives her one of the poison pills that he made. Eugene says he doesn’t want her to go; but he believes she’s already gone. The pill is not what Sasha was hoping for.
Alexandria
The group returns home to find Rosita at the gate. They get out and ask about Sasha. She says she brought someone with her.
Rosita takes the group to the cell that Morgan built. Dwight (Austin Amelio) sits inside, waiting for Rick. Daryl charges for him, ready to beat him up. The group stops him and Rosita says he wants to help them.
Rick say ok. He pulls his gun on Dwight and tells him to get on his knees.
Thoughts
This was an exciting episode that makes me wish this week would fly by. My first reason being that we’ve waited all season to see these communities come together to stand up to Negan. Rick finally has what he needs to stand up to the man who broke him. Of course, it’s not perfect. Rick still has obstacles to overcome before he can truly beat Negan. He has people, he has guns, but does he have enough?
And Maggie…after everything she went through at the beginning of the season, she is still running into a road block called Gregory. Power is an evil thing sometimes. It makes people do disgusting things. I’m interested to see how far Gregory will actually go to keep his power over Hilltop….especially when Rick and the others stand up to Negan. Gregory is such a coward. He thinks he has all of the answers, but he doesn’t have the guts to do what he needs to do. He needs to step back and let someone else lead. This is the only way to ensure he remains safe…which is all Gregory wants.
When Negan stopped David from raping Sasha made me think about what does Negan’s world look like to him. He takes what he wants, he has several wives, he kills whoever he wants… And he won’t let others do something that he deems as bad. He obviously has some sort of values when it comes to women. He even offers to let Sasha run the Sanctuary with him.
We usually only get to see one side of things, Rick’s side. We get to see and feel the pain that Rick goes through when they come across someone that Rick thinks is bad. The Governor, Terminus people, Negan..even Shane was bad in Rick’s eyes. Just think about it. All of these people probably thought they were saving lives. They thought they were doing something good for the people who followed them. Negan thinks so. He seems to know what people are looking for in this apocalyptic world. He gives them some sort of power back into their lives.
Take Eugene for example. Eugene shows us that Negan does have something to offer people: shelter, food, a bed, clothes, a job…and Negan gave Eugene a purpose. At Alexandria, Eugene had been humiliated when everyone found out he lied about who he was and how important he said he was. Negan made him important again. Some people in this world need that kind of power. They need to feel important.
And Oceanside. I knew that Rick would get the guns; I just hoped he would get some of the warriors too. Oceanside is very unique. It’s like the Walking Dead version of the Amazon village in Wonder Woman. All of the women are strong and can fight well. They have as much reason to destroy the Saviors as Rick’s gang does. I have a feeling that they will join before it’s all over. Their skills are too good to not be included in this war.
Next week will be intense. What is Negan planning for Sasha? Will Eugene snap out of his fear induced loyalty to Negan? Can Rick trust Dwight? It’s a extended finale that will surely have us wishing for October to get here sooner than later.
