The past and present cast took to social media to express their gratitude and sadness for the iconic actor. Wilson had been acting for over 50 years. Previous to TWD, he was best known as Richard Hickock in the 1967 adaptation of In Cold Blood. He was on TWD from 2011-2014 as Hershel, a widowed farmer turn father figure. Spaghetti Tuesdays won’t be the same.
It’s kind of a running joke that anyone will a moral compass doesn’t last long on TWD. Wilson’s portrayal of Hershel was the ultimate moral compass. I got the chance to say hello to Mr. Wilson during Walker Stalker Con, as I’m sure many fans have. He was such a warm and gracious man. He kind of makes you forget you’re talking to a celebrity and that you’re talking to a great and wise man. Thank you Scott Wilson for being a great man.
TWD cast members, Chandler Riggs (Carl Grimes), Emily Kinney (Beth Greene), Laurie Holden (Andrea), Khary Peyton (Ezekiel) and many others posted tributes to Wilson.
The Walking Dead season nine premieres tonight, October 7 on AMC.

The first time I met Scott Wilson, he gave me a big hug and said that this thing I had become apart of… was a family. He said I had a responsibility to take care of it. I have tried very hard to do that, sir. & I will continue. I promise. See you on the other side, my friend. pic.twitter.com/EhMm0dQbtx
