The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon episode two teaches us that resilience knows no age. In “Alouette,” Daryl (Norman Reedus) and company enter Neverland as we find out more about Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) and Laurent’s (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) past.
FLASHBACK
The zombie apocalypse started pretty much the same in France as it did in America. A walker bit someone and they died, then reanimated and they bit someone … they died and bit someone … and so on and so on. Isabelle wasn’t the saint that we see now, in fact, she was quite the party girl and a pickpocket. She experienced the apocalypse walking home from a nightclub. Things got dangerous real quick in the subways and the streets of Paris. Luckily, someone saved her and drove her home.
His name is Quinn (Adam Nagaitis) and he really likes Isabelle. He offers to take her somewhere safe outside of the city, but she won’t leave without her sister Lily (Faustine Koziel). Along the way, Lily gets sick and reveals that she is pregnant. Quinn tries to convince Isabelle to leave her sister behind. Isabelle appears to agree with Quinn. She actually steals his keys. Isabelle and Lily leave Quinn behind.

ON THE ROAD

Speaking of kids, the group is ambushed by Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. A group of kids, seemingly all under the age of 18 take the group to a pre-school where there’s only one adult to look after them. That adult is their teacher but she is also very sick. The kids are doing well for themselves. They have crops, chickens and hunt for food. They also have school, church, and a television to keep them entertained. The kids also have weapons. Some of the older kids are also out on a mission.
Their leader is Lou (Kim Higelin). She tells the group that there is a man who lives in a nearby castle. When the world fell, he raided homes and took supplies and food. They tried raiding the castle, but it ended badly for them. Daryl thinks the guy might have a mule that they can take and medicine for the teacher. Lou says the place is dangerous, but agrees to take Daryl there the next day. First they have to watch their favorite show, Mork and Mindy. Later, Isabelle asks Daryl why he lied to Lou about the medicine. They both know the teacher is so sick that she may die soon. Daryl says he just wants to go home.

MAKING FRIENDS
The next day, Lou takes Daryl to the castle. Daryl asks why Lou lies to the children about their missing loved one. She says she doesn’t know how to tell them the truth. When Daryl and Lou get to the castle, they find the drawbridge is partially up and the moat is full of walkers. Daryl and Lou find a shed full of tools and look for something they can use to climb over the drawbridge. When they find what they need, Daryl sneaks out and locks Lou inside the shed. He says she’ll be safe there and he works better alone.

Laurent has never been around children his own age and has trouble fitting in. Sylvie is worried about him. She says he questions where he comes from and how he fits into the world. She wonders the same for herself. Isabelle promises that they will find their place when they get to the nest. Laurent goes off on his own and finds their donkey being eaten by other animals. He is sad and apologizes to the animal, saying he should have been there. Later, Isabelle and Sylvie find Laurent near the donkey. He’s upset with them for lying to him.
ALOUETTE
Lily is still sick and apparently in labor, but she doesn’t know that. They see an ambulance on the side of the road and stop, hoping someone can help Lily. All of the medical staff are dead. Isabelle and Lily run back to their car, but one of the walkers grabs Lily from behind before she gets into the car.

They drive to a nearby abbey. Mother Superior (Catherine Arditi) and Father Jean (Hugo Dillon) greet them and bring them inside to help Lily. Lily discovers a bite on her arm. The nuns clean up and treat the bite and prepare her to deliver. Isabelle helps Lily change clothes and the girl has a contraction. To calm her down, Isabelle sings Alouette. Their mother used to sing that song to them. The contraction stops and Lily asks Isabelle to take care of her baby. Isabelle agrees, but she’s confused as to why Lily asks her that. Another contraction comes quickly.
STORMING THE CASTLE
When Daryl gets into the castle, he finds a storage room full of food. He also finds one of the kids locked in a basement. The kid’s name is Herisson (Milo Maze). Daryl tells the kid to go with him, but someone starts shooting at them from across the courtyard. Daryl gives Herisson a gun and tells him to shoot back. In between shots, Daryl sneaks into the castle and goes after the shooter.
When he finds the shooter, Daryl discovers the guy is American. His name is RJ Gaines (Ned Dennehy). He’s from Texas and he’s excited to find out that Daryl is from America too. He raided the towns and took everything he could so he would survive until he could find a way home. Daryl pulls him out to the courtyard and decides to take RJ with him back to Lou. He wants her to decide what to do with the guy. RJ pleads with Daryl not to send him to the kids. He has a wife and kids back in Texas waiting for him. Daryl informs him that America is just as dead as France is.

Daryl and Herisson load up a wagon, including some gas tanks. They tie RJ’s hands and pull him along behind the wagon. One of the wagon wheels breaks as they go over the bridge. While Daryl tries to fix it, RJ grabs his gun. They fight for the gun and fall into the moat. RJ is hanging on a rope from the bridge, but the dead feed on him anyway. Daryl fights his way to the gun. He shoots one of the gas tanks and kills several walkers. Just as one of the walkers grabs him, an arrow shoots from above, saving Daryl.

Lou and one of the older kids arrived just in time to save Daryl. One of the boys looks down at the moat and sees his brother among the dead. The boy gets upset because Lou lied to him. Daryl shoots the walker in the head at his brother’s request. They return to the school, but without the wagon of supplies. Sylvie informs them that the teacher has passed. Lou is sad that they didn’t return in time, but Daryl says the medicine wouldn’t have helped. He lied to her to get a horse and he’s sorry. Lou is scared because there are no more adults. Daryl tells her to keep doing what she’s doing. The kids depend on her now.
The kids have a funeral for their teacher and then say goodbye to Daryl. Isabelle tells Laurent that it’s time to go, but he wants to stay at the school with his new friends. They make him leave and he pouts by walking instead of riding in the wagon.

Codron (Romain Levi) returns to the abbey and finds the tape recorder. He listens to Daryl’s recording and goes through Father Jean’s journals. He also finds the map to the nest with all of the names of their contacts listed on the map.
MIRACLE
Laurent continues to pout, despite Sylvie’s insistence that he ride in the wagon. She tells him to stop being a baby, but he snaps back that Isabelle treats him like a baby. Isabelle says he’s not like other children because he’s special. Daryl jumps out of the wagon and walks with Laurent, trying to ease the tension. Laurent asks what makes him special. He just wants to be like other kids.
Back to the past, Lily dies while delivering. Father Jean prepares to cut her open to save the baby and she reanimates. The nuns strap her down so she won’t hurt anyone and they remove the baby. The baby is lifeless, but the nuns are able to revive it. It’s a boy. They give him to Isabelle. She walks around with the boy and stops at the statue of St. Laurent. That’s how she chose his name.
