The Walking Dead returns in just a little over a month and a lot of news about the new cast members has come out since San Diego Comic Con. The latest is the addition of Ryan Hurst as Beta of the Whisperers, as first reported by The Wrap.

Hurst is best known as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy. He has also starred in the movies Remember the Titans, Saving Private Ryan and the Bates Motel television series. He has the height and build for the character, especially since Beta has some key fights in the comics.

Beta is the right hand man to Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers played by Samantha Morton. The Whisperers first appeared in issue #130 of The Walking Dead comics. They are a group of survivors that wear walker skin to blend in with walkers so they can travel freely. They communicate by whispering to avoid drawing attention from the walkers.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Trailer

We got a quick glimpse of the Whisperers at the end of the season 9 trailer. You will have to watch the trailer a few times to hear the whispers. In the comics, the Whisperers are the next adversary for the survivors at Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom.

Castle Rock‘s Cassady McClincy also joins the cast as Alpha’s daughter Lydia. In the comics, Lydia and Carl (Chandler Riggs) have thing. Without Carl on the show, it’s uncertain how Lydia will fit into the story or if another character will take Carl’s place in the story line.

I’m getting more excited for this season. I’ve been wondering which SOA alum would show up first on TWD.  Two of my favorite shows colliding – it’s awesome! Let us know what you think of the casting for season 9.
