Agrabah is on the horizon. In only a few months we’ll be seeing the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic Aladdin. While there are mixed feelings regarding the Genie, there’s a bigger plot that can either make or break the film: the relationship between Aladdin and Jasmine. In the new still image thanks to Empire, it looks like the couple are meeting for the first time.

We haven’t seen much of film yet but this is our first time seeing the characters together. Just like her animated counterpart, Jasmine (Naomi Scott) doesn’t look overly thrilled at Aladdin’s (Mena Massoud) intrusion. While in the animated film it later turns to appreciation and attraction, it’s unclear whether this princess will fall so quickly for the street rat’s charms. It must also be noted that her pointy boots are pretty awesome!

In the article, producer Dan Lin stated that Jasmine is going to have more of an “active role”. “In the original movie, it felt like [Jasmine] didn’t have as compelling a goal,” Lin said. “Her main aim was to find the love of her life. In this case, the romance is important, but she also wants to see more of Agrabah, and take more of a leadership role in ruling the city. Her character has a much stronger journey.” I can appreciate a woman wanting to learn more about her community. Especially a royal woman trying to take on an active leadership role. However, I couldn’t say finding love is uncompelling. It doesn’t make the character “stronger” because love is second to her. That kind of talk just pushes the stereotype that “strong women” and women in love are mutually exclusive. Women can be both. I hope that’s what Lin meant with that statement.
