It’s hard to believe that we haven’t seen Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis (which also by the way put Tom Hardy on our radar). But here we are, barely hanging on in anticipation for the Star Trek: Picard series premiere on Thursday.

When it comes to genre giants like Star Trek, little is done without thought. With that being said, the latest trailer for the new series made us think of Star Trek: Nemesis. During the new promo, a haunting version of Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies plays. In Star Trek: Nemesis, Riker and Troi get married. During the wedding reception, Data sings Blue Skies. At the end of Nemesis, “Data” tries to sing it again. This leads us to believe what many have already been speculating, events in that film will be in play in the new series. Or perhaps they just want to remind us of Data’s fate in the film. Guess what I’m watching tonight?

In the promo we hear Picard say, “All that emptiness, all that silence… I’d forgotten how much I loved it.” Then Jean-Luc puts his Starfleet badge back on (squee!). Blue Skies begins to play and we get to see his dog Number One, Troi and what seems to be a shuttle landing in the Star Trek famous Vasquez Rocks. Picard asks Starfleet to reinstate him for one more mission. We hear him say, “One is never safe from the past, but the future is left for us to write.” Color me inspired. Then we see what has already become an iconic visual, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) walking and shooting two phaser rifles like the BAMF she is.

Star Trek: Picard premieres this Thursday, January 23rd, on CBS All Access.

“Star Trek: Picard” features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. Alongside Stewart, “Star Trek: Picard” will also star Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Evan Evagora.
