Highlights

  • Variety reports that Netflix has opted not to renew The Sandman beyond its upcoming second season.
  • The cancellation seems inevitable, given creator and former executive producer Neil Gaiman’s horrific string of sexual abuse and assault allegations. However, according to Variety, Netflix already planned to end the series with Season 2.
  • The Sandman Season 2 will land on Netflix sometime this year.

The Sandman Season 2

Our portal to the Dreaming is about to close. Netflix has canceled fantasy series The Sandman, as reported by Variety, which will soon premiere its second season.

According to Variety, the plan at Netflix was to wrap the series after two seasons. Season 2 began production in 2023. That said, the news comes after creator and former executive producer Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual abuse and assault. The accusations first surfaced in July 2024 via Tortoise Media. Gaiman is no longer involved with the series in any capacity.

Gaiman’s other Netflix show, Dead Boy Detectives, was canceled in September 2024 after one season. As for Good Omens, the Prime Video series adapted from the book Gaiman co-wrote with the late Terry Pratchett, we learned in October 2024 that it’ll get a 90-minute episode to finish its narrative

Showrunner Allan Heinberg made the following statement:

The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
