Praise be — The Righteous Gemstones is returning for Season 4 after its best crop of episodes yet. The divinely hilarious (and heartwarming) comedy will undoubtedly brighten our Sundays with more biting wit and unexpectedly bloody exploits after a solid track record of quality storytelling. So far, it’s proven to be one of the most consistent comedies in recent years.
Below, I’ve compiled a list of seven things I want to see in Season 4 to help us weather the long wait before us. We’ll get through this together, friends, with plenty of prayer and Jesse’s trademark car pranks.
Kelvin and Keefe in Domestic Bliss
Kelvin (Adam Devine) and Keefe (Tony Cavalero) fans the world over summoned a collective cheer when the pair finally kissed in Season 3 Episode 8, “I Will Take You by the Hand and Keep You.” Admittedly, I audibly (not internally) squealed the first time I watched it … and went back and watched it again. The series has beautifully, methodically developed their relationship over three seasons, from in the closet, full-on suppression of their feelings to living their truth in love.

As someone who grew up steeped in the church, the show accurately depicts the complex feelings surrounding romantic love, sexual urges and the puritanical repressing of “inappropriate” feelings because it’s “sinful.” Now that Kelvin and Keefe are taking the next step in their relationship and have the support of the Gemstone family, I want to see them dwell in domestic bliss in Season 4. Let’s see them argue about inane things like who’s leaving the bedroom window open at night or meal prep for the week.

More Judy and Amber Adventures
Season 3 seemingly mended fences between Judy (Edi Patterson) and Amber (Cassidy Freeman). The threat, at least on Judy’s end, has been neutralized. I’d love to see them have bona fide adventures in Season 4. It would be fun for viewers to watch their friendship and relationship as sisters-in-law build from its bare-bones existence last season to the close bond we know it can be. Feminism, y’all. We need these two to join forces as the badass women they are to conquer the world of dicks.
Gideon Learning the Preacher Ropes From Eli
We didn’t get a lot of Gideon (Skyler Gisondo) in Season 3, save a few narratively pivotal moments when Gideon was the hero. Seriously, if you’re on the run from a baddie, you want Gideon Gemstone behind the wheel. Given his prominence in earlier seasons, putting Gideon in the backseat makes sense. However, it’s time to bring him out of the storytelling shadows and show him learning the preacher ropes from Grandpa Eli (John Goodman).
I’ve always loved Gideon and Eli’s relationship. I think Eli’s most like himself with his favorite grandson. He seemed genuinely touched when Gideon asked how to be like him in the Season 3 finale. Watching Gideon undergo that training in Season 4 would be a blast.

Uncle Baby Billy Thrust Back Into the Spotlight
Uncle Baby Billy (Walton Goggins) elevates every scene in The Righteous Gemstones. Hands down. He’s a hilarious addition to this comedically strong cast of characters. Baby Billy is always thinking of his next creative endeavor that’ll thrust him back into the spotlight, catapulting him to the level of fame he had when partnering with Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles) in their heyday.
Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers felt like the next big thing for UBB until those locusts wreaked havoc, and Peter (Steve Zahn) almost blew himself up. Now, Uncle Baby Billy could resume production of his Bible trivia show or pursue a new route to success. I like seeing him try and fail to reach those celebrity-status heights. He never lets anything keep him down for too long.

BJ Joining Jesse’s Church Pals
Jesse (Danny McBride) and his church pals helped BJ (Tim Baltz) lay the smackdown on Judy’s former lover, rising victorious like a phoenix from the toxic masculinity ashes. While BJ was reinvigorated with a new sense of confidence, he retains the open, ally-to-marginalized-communities mindset for which we’ve always loved him.
I’d love to see BJ become accepted into Jesse’s church buddies group. We haven’t seen him interact with that many folks outside of Judy, especially in terms of friendship. He needs some friends! Imagine the shenanigans the dude-bros would get into if they spend time with each other next season.

Another Musical Hit on Par With “Misbehavin'”
Sure, Uncle Baby Billy had his own song in Season 3, but it’s not on par with “Misbehavin’.” It gets stuck in my head at least once a week. Perhaps this is how UBB gets another chance at musical stardom — he pens a new catchy tune. Remember when he tried to take Judy under his wing? Maybe they can join forces again to bring that Aimee-Leigh component to the equation.
McBride, Patterson and series composer Joseph Stephens were on creative fire when they penned this song. It’s time to give our musically inclined characters another hit tune to take this fictional (and our) world by storm. Make it so, Season 4.
A More External Threat to the Gemstones Empire
Last season gave us the familial antagonists-turned-allies with the Montgomerys. Season 4 should switch it up with a more external threat to the Gemstone empire. Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time the show has reached outside the family to find the villain (see Season 2’s the Lissons). However, I have faith that the writers will find a creative solution to what could become stale after a few seasons of delivering more of the same: someone threatens to topple the Gemstones, and our characters fight back.

I’d love to see the empire in genuine peril. Perhaps someone with even more power than the Gemstones exposing all their secrets and airing their dirty laundry. And the solution isn’t as simple as Jesse and his siblings killing the journalist Thaniel Block. I want the exposure to be out of the Gemstones’ control and have them see real repercussions that lead to a fall from grace. Then, they can work their way back into society’s good graces. Let’s launch the narrative stakes through the stratosphere.
