Westworld was supposed to be a fantasy come to life. And come to life they did.  HBO has released the first trailer for the second season of the hit AI series.

Backed by an orchestral rendition of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” the story continues within the Wild West world that we’ve all come to know in season one.  A lot of the cast has returned along with some new faces.  And notably absent is Anthony Hopkins, although he is listed as a returning cast member.

Maeve (Thandie Newton) seeks out the daughter she has always dreamed about. It appears that she is the only visitor to the Shogun World.  Maeve along with many other AIs attack the station that controls the park.  There is a lot of unrest for those who are actually human.  Except for the Man in Black (Ed Harris), who says their kind are free.  He plans to burn the whole place down.  And Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) leads the rebellion says “it’s us or them.”

So many questions about the park.  There appears to be an ocean nearby, so does this mean the park is on an island?  And if it is, can the hosts get off the island?  First they have to get out of the building.  I have a feeling the hosts will find out…they’re not as free as they think.  And that’s when it gets scary.   I’m excited about this season, especially the addition of Zahn McClarnon who plays the Painted Man.

Live without limits in a world where every human appetite can be indulged. Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris and more — this dark odyssey follows the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.

Westworld returns on Sunday April 22, on HBO.
