The Penguin Panel

A panel was held at the SDCC 2024, digging into the dark, gritty world of the upcoming Max series, The Penguin. HBO unveiled the official trailer and gave the crowd an extended look at Sofia Falcone, aka The Hangman. The timeline was also confirmed as being set one week after The Batman and will lead into the events of The Batman 2. It will focus on the power exchange happening in the ongoing drug war.

Colin Farrell plays Oz Cobb, The Penguin, and the transformation shown in the trailer is nothing short of impressive, down to the progressing limp. Fans also get a mind-blowing look (no pun intended) at Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone.

The Trailer

The trailer gave fans a look at the dangerous, gang-centric underbelly of the Gotham universe. The tone and gritty atmosphere match the adult comic-fan-centered media from other DC projects like Joaquin Phoenix’s film, Joker. It hits many of the same themes, such as the belief there’s no honest way to get ahead and the ends justify violent means.

What we have seen of the plot so far is set up like a classic mafia movie, true to Penguin’s roots. Family will be a key element in the story’s development. There’s a shot where Oz is talking to his mother, and she says, “You promised me, Oswald. I deserve a better life.” He then responds, “I’m working on it.”

This trailer also introduces Sofia, the daughter of crime lord Carmine Falcone, who is out to stake her claim on her late father’s territory. Sofia is a former Arkham inmate, and we see a flashback of how dangerous she can be without explaining why she’s out. The bloody, action-packed trailer promises a dark Gotham.

The Penguin will have an eight-episode run and air weekly at 6 pm PT/9 pm ET starting September 19, 2024. Follow Geek Girl Authority for more SDCC 2024 news.
