“Being ‘touched’ is not a defect of character.” We’ve got an official trailer for HBO’s The Nevers and it’s glorious!

The Nevers is co-written by Joss WhedonJane Espenson and Doug Petrie. Whedon was initially showrunner until he departed the project in November, citing personal challenges. Philippa Goslett took the reins after his exit. The story follows a gang of Victorian women who obtain incredible abilities. In the trailer, we see protagonists Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly) as women who are “touched.” Meaning, they have supernatural powers.

Now, The Nevers trailer also briefly addresses the origins behind said supernatural powers. This elusive thing or being arrived in London and brought with it a magic that “mocked God.” Amalia and Penance work hard to reassure the masses that the “touched” are just humans with something special thrown into the mix. We’re introduced to Pip Torrens‘ Lord Massen and Olivia Williams‘ Lavinia Bidlow. Additionally, we meet Dr. Horatio Cousens (Zackary Momoh), Hugo Swann (James Norton) and Maladie (Amy Manson).

There are fight scenes aplenty interwoven into this brief one minute and 40-second trailer. I can definitely tell Whedon wrote The Nevers. The battle choreography smacks of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but set in the Victorian era. Not to mention, there’s a hint of Whedon’s signature snark in the two leads. However, it simultaneously feels different than anything he’s written before. It looks like a steampunk novel come to life.

So, if you’re an avid fan of costume dramas and an ardent lover of all things Victorian, this show may be for you. I’m tickled pink that we’ll be getting The Nevers much sooner than anticipated. You can watch the trailer below.

The Nevers will debut sometime in April on HBO and HBO Max.
